Hi:

I am about to apply for PIO card for my kid; looking at the CGI website, it looks like I need to submit my original Indian passport, Record of Landing and PR card to them. I am not comfortable with this, since I will be out of documents for almost a month.. Are there any other options?

If I go to consulate in person, will they verify and return the documents then itself or will they just accept it and mail it back to me along with the PIO card - in which case, I will be in the same no-document situation.

Also, what are the wait times like at the consulate? Fast and efficient by any chance?

Thanks Guys!

You can go directly with all your original documentation. They will verify and hand over.

A friend of mine went to the consulate yesterday for some passport services and he reached at 8.30 am. He was 12 th in line. However after 9 am it gets really busy, so try being there by 8.15 or so.

Hi !
Have you considered OCI over PIO ? Is there any particular reason other than what I posted ealiler . ( Save money by getting PIO first )
I hope you know all the benefits associated with OCI against PIO ..

Does anyone know of what kind of documents are considered valid as far as proof of landing is concerned??? For instance do they accept acedemic certificats as proof of landing?

thanks

As much as I would like to apply for OCI, I cannot. I am continuing to be Indian and am not planning to give that up. So PIO is the only option for now.

Mahraj,
Looks like many Indians are very confused thinking that PIO card and OCI are drastically different.

Viggy,
They are almost the same with the former being valid for 15 years and the latter life long. There are some additional advantages of getting the OCI. Both the cards are still one and the same as far as Indianness is concerned. Taking an OCI does not make you a dual citizen nor does it take your "Indianness away". In fact, the OCI will make you more "Indian" by allowing you not to register with the the police station, should your stay exceed 180 days one time.
