My present hard disk is about to give up( i get errors like check disk etc) so i want to create a copy of my hard disk (including installed S/W) to a new hard disk.
I see that there are many s/w available to do this but at a cost. is there a way to do this without having to buy one or if i have to buy which one would be a good choice.

buy a USB stick and copy important data on it.
When the HD goes kaput use the OS CD to restore OS. If all works then fine, if not then buy a new HD and restore OS

Does anybody have a mirroring S/W they can share? Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image...or any other? I want to use it once and dont wish to spend $50~$100 on a new S/W...
Anyone?
