I’m going to jump into this discussion………….and I’m going to be harsh.
Kuwaituser – if you’re trying to denigrate Canada, I draw your attention to August 2, 1990. Were you in Kuwait that day? Did you have time to collect your suitcase – or your savings from your bank account before you fled the country? Did you live in a camp in Iraq / Jordan for a week? If you – or anyone else – believe that ‘labour’ jobs are symptomatic of ALL immigrants in Canada, I’m quite happy to remind you of how you people lived like pigs in camps………so much for the Middle East that you guys love so much.

I don't believe Kuwaituser was trying to defame any country, just pointing out the differences. I was in Kuwait too and during the invasion, not only were my suitcases intact when I returned after 5 months, but the house was untouched (here the houses that are occupied are robbed most times). All the money was in the bank. And FYI I also lived in the camps in Jordan and they were clean, fresh water provided with dal/chawal and fruit (Apples) every day. If you've seen any gandagi in the camps, it's the people who made it not the govt.

Guys, please calm down a bit.
I would say "To each his own". If someone loves the Middle East and for them its a better place than Canada, no problem at all. I guess every place has its advantages and disadvantages and people's preferences can't really be changed that easily.
All I can say is I would not like to live in an enviroment where my thinking/opinions are shackled by a constitution of hypocrisy. Not by the govt. nor by the people. And this is my "general" impression of the middle east, may not be true. Can't say much since I've never been there.
Let's admit for a minute though that it is such a great place as you guys describe it. Why then are there so many desis applying for Canadian immigration from there? I'm not being sarcastic, I would really like to know what issues force people to migrate or make the move.
Another thing (which I am genuinely not aware of) is how does a Hindu practise his religion in the Middle East? Are we allowed to have temples? Are you guys allowed to celebrate Diwali and perform poojas and stuff? I'm not a super-religious guy, but I'm sure many other in the ME are.
Would be nice to know.

As far as this topic of saving ‘Rs 10 lakhs’ is concerned………we've had a lot of figures being thrown around on the previous pages of this thread.
I made a simplistic calculation:
Household income ------------- $70,000
Income tax (see notes below) $(13,500)
Living expenses---------------- $(10,000)
Rent ---------------------------- $(18,000)
----------------------------------------------
Saving----------------------------$28,500
==========================
$28,500 = Rs 10,26,000 (@1C$ = INR 36)
Notes:
Computed income tax on the basis that the above amount was earned by a single earning member. If both husband and wife were earning this amount collectively with marginal jobs, there would be 2 basic exemption limits and therefore taxes would be lower by about $1,500.
Assumed person is paying rent of $1,500 per month (good enough for a decent 2 bedroom place in Toronto). If you choose to buy a house, a good part of this would be going into equity and therefore would not be an expense in the real sense of the term.
Made a very basic calculation, did not consider the impact of RESP's or other tax saving instruments.
Income taxes computed as under:
Household income -----------70,000
Contribution to an RRSP-----12,600 (maxed out
----------------------------------------
Taxable income---------------57,400
=======================
Provincial component:
First $7,301 = Nil
Next $25,134 @ 6.05% = $1,521
Next $24,965 @ 9.15% = $2,284
--------
$3,805
=====
Federal component:
First $7,756 = Nil
Next $24,427 @ 16% = $3,908
Next $25,217 @ 22% = $5,548
---------
$9,456
======
Total income taxes federal + provincial = $13,261 (rounded to $13,500)
For those of you who say that you pay 35% in taxes - have a look at the computation above and re-calculate your average tax liability.
Accountants among you, your comments.............
