My brother in law who visited us from India was shocked to see my hubby pick up plates, do dishes, run a wash, dress up kids, make bed, iron clothes, cook B'fast, vaccum home. He is not doing this in India and neither lend a helping hand here during his stay......what shall I call him now...ignorant...
....pampered....or typical Indian male!!

Please clarify this. Are you saying men should not do both dishes and shovel snow?
Jona, what's worse is that they probably thought that ur hubby was a joru ka ghulam coz he was doing all this?
I know it's not good to stereotype coz not all human beings are the same but I think what we look at is what's the majority? I was fortunate to be brought up in a house hold where all humas were just that.. humans and not men or women. My parents taught me to treat all humans equally but my dad did always tell me that there are some things women shouldn't do not because they are not capable but because their delicate bodies are not meant for things like lifting heavy loads for example because that wasn't good from a health perspective for women (of course that didn't stop me but at least he did tell me). The one thing that i remember to date is that he never had any examples of what MEN shouldn't do. He never backed out of any chores ever even though he was brought up in a completely opposite environment!
The point is that this is not just an indian mentality but in general a MALE Stereotype that's universal! Indians, Chinese, Whites, Jews, Muslims, hindus, you name it... all these different ethnicities and religions have this because God did make men and women different and we have to accept that but we also have to see that the world that God created is not the same now and roles have changed. I saw a poster say that Men should do all chores but then women should also not shy from shoveling snow for example. What's funny is not a single woman has said that I'll shovel if you cook or wash the dishes
) Just something to think about!!
CHandresh Ji, you should probably just look at the men in and around you and see what is considered as a typical indian male and let us know what you observe? Perhaps after reading everyone's thoughts you can see if you see such behavior?

He called us all Dollar ke Ghulam!! After returning back to India he's been advising everyone never to think of immigrating to Foreign because the life is very hard here. I'm a full time working mom/wife so he knew if hubby doesn't help we won't be able to run the home.......I've a project's deadline for tomorrow and this whole week hubby's been taking kids to dance, swim classes.....it'll be sad if men suddenly take it as joru ke ghulam thinking........
