I really do not understand what this fuss is all about...The idea is a pretty simple one... Have a picnic. Decide on a destination , agree on the cost , hire a bus , arrange some food. None of this is a big deal in a city like TO.
Three simple steps.....
1. Put up a list of possible 1 day destinations. Have a vote on this forum. Decide. Set date.
2. Calculate cost per person , give a trusted address to send check to (Biomed? Garvo?). Collect money, organize the trip. If enough people don't sign up , cancel and send check back.
3. ENJOY the picnic!
Let's try this once...If it doesn't work out we lose nothing , if it works out we can make this a regular affair!

Great idea. I hope it will be sometime in July/August so that my family and I could attend.
I would suggest to keep food simple like sandwiches, juice, fruits and have some games, music, etc. to get everyone to interact.

Picnics are a better way of meeting new desis compared to a meeting where there is an agenda. Meetings are necessary to discuss important issues.
You do not need a bus. People just drive to the picnic spot. This way you are free to leave if you get bored, your kids are cranky or someone is sick.
Food is not to be limited to sandwiches and juices. Make sure what you get is good enough for at least 8 people. You can lay all the food on the picnic table. This way you are free to eat at any time.
You could have games and believe for those of you whose company offer complimentary gifts try to get some and inform the organizer in advance. This way you can decide how many prizes to be given out.
The reason I suggested bus was to include everyone who do not have a car. I know at least 3 families who don't have one and they may not feel comfortable sharing a car with someone else. Moreover a lot of desis over here have cars which are not exactly in "prime" condition.
And Bus is more FUN ... You actually enjoy more TOGETHER in bus rather than in car.
Only Park is Boring, Water is Must !!! That too Clean FAMILY beach.
count me in for any kind of PICNIC.
count me in for any kind of Participation in Organising this.

The purpose of picnic is to have a relaxed feeling, I guess it can be better achieved by hiring a bus, that will also bring people closer, break the ice if any with songs, Antaksheris, Jokes etc.
Though I won't be there the idea of picnic really excites me...
Good discussion.
We can go anywhere around GTA withing driving distance of less than 200 kms. It could be park and beach and there are many of that kind.
We need to arrange for games and food. If we have few cricket bats we can pass a day, but what about kids? For food we can go for pot luck or cater to food. In case of catering we need to go for registration process, where as in case of pot luck, we don't need to do that. We can decide a day and place and anybody reading canadiandesi can come there.
One problem with a bus. It will cost about $20 per person per day for bus, with a driving distance of 300 kms around GTA. It means for a family of 4 it will cost $80. Whereas if one has car, the only cost is Gas, which should be only $30. (We don't count usage for this purpose)
Second problem is registering in advance. As bus is going to be a costly affair, we must know in advance who is coming. And those registered must come. Who is going to manage this?
I would be glad if any of canadiandesi members can manage this. I will provide all support - like registration process or sending a newsletter etc.
