Of course there are exceptions, but exceptions do not constitute the majority in statistical research.
I was always under the impression that material success(bill gates, dhirubai, mallya etc) IS an exception to the rule. As such, using statistics would be futile wouldnt it?
However... if you are convinced of the 100/80% luck theory. I'm sure it is correct(for you).
As an aside...have you guys heard of the Jewish saying
The father founds the bussiness, the children grow it and the grandchildren destroy it. Anyone agree? An example would be Bronfman's (although they are far from destroyed)

I agree luck is a factor at times. However, is luck something that we can govern or anticipate? Its a variable we have absolutely no control over, so why waste time pondering on when it'll strike.
When you're talking to a new immigrant who's all worried about his prospects in Canada, are you supposed to tell him "Wait till you get lucky, and then you'll have a great job?". Nooooo, you advise him to work on attributes HE has control over. (That's the essence of the Bhagvad Geeta as well). Reminds me of something my mom always says. Most of the times when she's sick, she still keeps working unless she really isn't able to. And when I ask her why she isn't resting, her reply is "Well, the fever's doing its job, let me do mine". I feel the same way about luck, let luck do its job while I do mine.
And what are you to tell a person who feels he's permanently unlucky? That there's no hope for you no matter what you do? Or just sit tight till luck arrives?
If someone's saying that since there's only a few people who actually made it to the pinnacle of success and the reason for it is their luck, I think they need to read their biographies. THAT is the inherent nature of success, a Gates or an Ambani would not be valued if everybody in the world became a Gates or an Ambani. And instead of speculating how they made it, why not hear it from themselves or those close to them? And then let me know how many of them seriously felt that luck was the main factor behind their success.

Yes, I have the positive attitude that I will be able to start it all over again
But why did I lose it in the first place, with everything in the right place? Why do I need it once again?
I have the answer, but that is not for this thread for me to put - but if someone has, I would love to hear from him/her.
Chandresh
Chandresh,
I have been in those shoes as well, have dealt with many situations when I really felt "Why me?". And the follow-up question to that (sometimes in minutes, sometimes in days) is "What's the point of that question?"
I'm really sorry to hear about your job but I'm pretty confident you'll land another one soon, the "postive attitude" in me says it'll be a better one this time.
Which leads me to an interesting thought, maybe postive attitude has different avatars. In this case its of hope. When I go to an interview, it assumes the form of confidence. And when I'm stuck in a deep rut, its determination.

BL, those are some very powerful insights, and I cannot agree more. Everyones convictions are well founded and they all have their reasons to believe in what they believe. We just keep sharing our experience and views of "life" just for the sake of sharing and learning about this lifethat we live, and the lessons that we learn everyday.
I am posting an incident of my life which reinforced this in my mind.
With whatever little experience i have in life i have realized that "LUCK" is not just what happens to us unexpectedly, but what we "DO" with what happens to us.
When we talk of luck, what could be a better luck than getting a lottery ?
9 years ago , when i was working in Dubai, my coworker and friend was going to india, he insisted me to share with him the Dhs500 airport lottery ticket . I did not share even after he tried a lot( i never spend money on lottery as a principle) . A few days later , while he was in india, i picked up a call from the airport telling me that my friend had won the lottery. Half a million Dhs( about Rs50 lakhs) . I was very happy for my friend and very upset with myself for letting go the chance of a lifetime, that too when he kept on insisting to buy the tickets. i spent many days in introspection wondering if my stubbornness on my principles made me miss a windfall . Everyone around me said the same thing as well.
But life went on , i continued working , my friend soon resigned from job and returned to Pune to start his own business and bought a nice big house and a car. Time went by we all got on with our own lives. Last i heard from him in 1995 that he was taking a world tour with his family . A few months back i got in touch with my old group from Dubai and learned that most of my group had grown and risen higher in the firm and moved on to better places in career and life , i traced the number of my Lottery wala friend to see how was he doing . We could strike that same old friendship after so many years , this time i felt closer to him than last when i knew him . It turned out that he has been struggling with his business, he tried getting back in the same company but failed bacause of the way he left in the middle of a major project . he also told me that now has now applied for Canadian immigration, He will be coming here in 2-3 yrs, I will help him when he comes here in whatever way i can and we now remain in constant contact. We are close friends now but our differences on our views on life still remain far apart .
He still blames his bad luck for his failures and struggles in life, and now he even blames the winning lottery ticket for starting the chain of bad lucks for him. It may very well be true for him, because that is what he believes in so strongly.
But for me this just reinforced my own belief that ....if there is any such thing as pure "LUCK", it is not what happens to us that matters , it is what we "DO" with what happens to us ...and that determines our fate.
I may be wrong in what i believe in, but this is what is true for me.

I feel my post is digressing from the topic f this thread .so i am also posting it under another thread , where we can just share our thoughts on LUCK and its role in our lives.

BHATWAT GITA SAYS :
"karmanye wadhika raste ma phaleshu kadachana" (do your duty but do not expect the fruit).
It says you will definitely get fruit but It does not say when exactly you can expect your fruit - may be in 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 1 year or several year????
The Lord Krishna definitely did not say in context of luck - he said do your job and forget it.
I agree with Mr. India as I too don't believe in lotteries and never by it - this is a principle and nothing to do with the LUCK. Remember good principals always pay you and leads you to success.
