It is like a lottery. It also depends on the visa officer handling your case.
For your wife, there is no problem. Let her enter Canada and ask for 6 month extension from there.
Now for you, PR expiry is a downer. The visa officer may come to a conclusion that you may not return back. However, if you have a job in India, vast income, good properties in India, widely travelled, this can add to your profile.
Visit the website and see what are the documents needed for super visa / visa and apply. If it is refused, apply the second time and then a third. This is a lottery only.
You did not tell us your age, your profession etc.. A lot of it matter on this 2 bits of information.
You can ask your children to get a letter of recommendation from their MP. It may help in some cases.
If you are a christian, you can get a letter of good conduct from your priest, outlining what all facilities that you did for the church etc.. It will create a sense of good will as most visa officers are christian.

murli can u specify what gap u r finding so I can update on that pints
1. Your PR expired in 2009. Do you still want to retain your PR in 2015 and above or do you want to just visit on Super visa / visa. What is your ultimate aim. Since you are 58+, was the PR that expired in 2009 your first maple card ? How long have you totally been in Canada. Why did you not apply for Canadian passport ?
2. Your wife has a visa to enter Canada. Do you want her to stay there and get her PR back (as her case is much stronger than yours) and then go for spouse sponsership. Of course, you will need to be apart for 4 years atleast but it is better than your children sponsering you for Family reunification as that may take in excess of 8 years. Of course, you can visit your wife often with Visa or vice versa.
3. If you are still in service (Some govt. jobs like Professor is till age 65), you have a good chance of getting visa as you have a job to come back to. Otherwise your pension and properties can form a strong link to come back to India.
Please give me clarity on point 1-2.
Murali.

Cost of lawyer in Canada is not that much. Most sri lankan's can afford that. First sitting is free. This is not a civil or a criminal case. It is a immigration case. It may cost $ 5000 - $ 10000 (depending on the complexity).
My hunch says avoid Desi's but the you have no choice. Desi's are the best to identify the loop holes of the system and lie at will. Go with a tested lawyer.
Adam and FH of CD will help you soon.
