I thank everbody who replied to my posting.
Mishtar India,
Thanks for your valuable inputs. I just wanted to clarify that I am the "wife" who can work. Yup, vygodsky is a female member of Canadian Desi. My husband is still employed with his old company (not in Canada) and we took the decision to move separately hoping that I can secure some employment soon. I have an MSc in Mathematics and an MBA in Finance. I would ideally like to find a job in an insurance company (since my academic qualifications is in that area). I am keeping an open mind and so at this point anything is acceptable to me. Do let me know if you get any leads in this regard. Also, you mentioned taking on a part time job. How do you go about doing that?
The apartment that we rented out is in Mississauga and it is easy for me to either take a bus to SQuare One or even walk down (at least in this weather).
About the query on settlement funds (Vj etal), most of the expenses in the first month were:
Rent (first and last month on signing the lease)
Phone (we had to pay a deposit of CAD 150, since we did not have any credit history here)
Cellphone (we were refused by Bell and asked to pay a deposit of CAD1000 and then eventually we got a rogers phone with no deposit)
Small TV
Basic Cable
Internet connection
Bed
Some kitchen utensils (like plates, glasses etc.)
Lamps (from walmart)
And of course, general purpose stuff like trash can etc.
All in all the rent for the first and lastmonth was the biggest dip into our savings(Over 1500 CAD). Other than that, I thought that we shopped prudently.
Once again, thank you all...
vygodsky,
Thanks for your reply. But I am not able to see the figure madam. I am curious to know that out of settlement funds, how much you had to spend after all these you have mentioned. If you can give item wise costs, it would be more beneficial for all.
Initial spending is the most crucial planning one has to do according to me after entering canada. And thats the reason, I would like to know exact head wise details of the costs. PLease provide if possible.
In fact my wife would be more happy to know the recurring monthly cost.
Rgds,
vj
Rent (first and last month) 1600
Telephone deposit 200
First month's bill plus advance billing, initial connection charges, taxes and all for telephone 150
Cable (basicplus installation) 40
Cellphone monthly charge+activation fee+nextmonth fee billed in advance+taxes 112
Internet (dialup from bell) 25 hours for CAD10
(if you go for DSL or cable modem add another 50 dollars)
Groceries for the month about CAD 100 (only for one person)
Bed 300
Lamps and other items 100
Miscellaneous (transportation etc) 100
TV100
I guess it works out to around 300 dollars(give or take a few dollars) to start with. Like i indicated before, the biggest dent was because of the rent.
Another expense for me (which i have not yet incurred) would be the secured credit card to start establishing my credit history. I wonder if any of you in the forum have an idea on this one.
Oh, and I was lucky to find a smaller lease term of 8 months rather than the usual 12 months, because it was a sublet of a person who moved out of the apartment before his lease term was over. Otherwise, I found that it is very difficult to obtain any lease shorter than a year, and I was unwilling to commit for such a long time without knowwing where I was going in the future.
My recurring monthly expenses would be the rent plus groceries plus telephone plus cable plus cellphone which is roughly CAD 1200 (since I have gone for really basic plans in all utilities)
Hope this was what u were looking for.
Vygodsky
Thanks a lot,
Quite a usefull stuff. It seems when we will be two, I mean me and my wife., the expense should touch approx.. 1800/2000. Hence calculating in a backward way, we must have a pre tax earning of approx. 2600/2800 CAD/month.
Ok...
