A family-run business is trying a unique approach to recruit people to live and work year-round in rural Cape Breton by offering two free acres of land to people who are willing to relocate.
Farmer's Daughter is a general store and bakery in Whycocomagh, N.S., which has a population of about 800. Sisters Sandee MacLean and Heather Coulombe took over the business earlier this year from their dairy farmer parents, who started it nearly 25 years ago.
MacLean told CBC News that the store has great employees ? but it needs more of them to expand their operations.
"We have big ideas about what we'd like to do," she said.
2 free acres of land
The business would like to increase the number of year-round employees from 12 to at least 15, but hasn't gotten much response to traditional "help wanted" ads. Many young people have left the community to work in places like Halifax or Alberta.
MacLean and Coulombe came up with the idea of offering two free acres of land to people who are willing to relocate to Whycocomagh.
As of Tuesday morning, less than two days after the Facebook post was published, MacLean says they have been flooded with inquiries from around the country.
"The phone's been ringing off the hook. We have, I think, 350 emails in our email account and 500 and some messages on Facebook, all people wanting to come work for us," she said.

Nice initiative !!!!
On side topic:
I strongly believe there is always work available for people who really wants to work.
All this un-employee drama is crape - Its just people wants their choice job / location.
there are thousand small/mid company in rural area looking for people to work and they have hard time finding them.... while lazy people mostly in metro cities are whining about No-job by siting down on their comfy couch...

5 years at a minimum wage in the middle of nowhere doing a store job, no thanks, to get some land which is not worth anything. You work somewhere else for 5 years, you will have job satisfaction and higher salary and better weather, and save enough to buy 20 Acres of land, not the 2 they are giving.

How Canada became to a farming community..: That was long time ago. People got lands and a free ticket to come into Canada. Read about Land Grants of Western Canada, 1870-1930
We missed out on this deal.. Because we were born late and arrived here long time after that. Please read on..
Immigration to the Prairie Provinces. See also: History of Alberta, History of Saskatchewan, and History of Manitoba.. etc.,
Rupert's Land..: Please read... Background
In 1871, an order in council initiated a uniform land survey of the three Prairie Provinces as well as the railway belt of British Columbia. The land had to be accurately described and located through cadastral surveys before Letters Patent could be issued to a homesteader.
The Dominion Lands Act required that each homesteader provide proof that the land had increased in value through additions (cultivation, building construction, etc.) costing labour and/or capital. The Dominion Lands Act stipulated the improvements that had to be made to a land grant before a homesteader would receive a Letters Patent from the Crown.
When a homesteader filed an application, the local Dominion Lands Office screened and validated the claim, and sent an inspector to the property to confirm that the improvements had been made. If the Board approved the application, it was forwarded to Ottawa for the "preparation and issuance of patents" by the Lands Patent Branch.
Letters Patent were issued to grant or confirm title to a portion of land. They are the first title to land, and serve as proof that the land no longer belongs to the Crown. They were issued by the Registrar General's Office of the Department of Secretary of State from 1867 to 1883 and by the Lands Patent Branch of the Department of the Interior after 18 July 1883.
For grants made by the provinces after 1930 or any land transactions after the issuing of the original Letters Patent, the relevant provincial archives must be consulted.

Still there are acres and acres of land that is called CROWN LAND. Do you sing? If you can then they are going for a song. A good one if you know how to sing.!!
Even now Canada is good for the farming people. They all live in the BOONIES and next door neighbor is 100 miles away in a few places. Some live a hermits life.

If I were to seek a job in a remote location, I will surely cut a deal. Want to be partners with them. At the end of Five years, I will be living next door to them as a partner. That is a great choice. fh
