Cost of Living in Toronto depends upon your needs..

If u are staying as PG it may cost u upto max. $500-550 WHICH includes onetime full lunch or dinner and breakfast.

If u are with family and want to stay in Basement Apt. it may cost u upto 700 /800 for 1 / 2 BHK plus food expenses of around 300 dollars/month and some sundry exp. like internet /cable /phone connection etc. @ 100 dollars. so in total it may come around 1200 dollars for a family of 3 in basement and if u want to stay in apartment add 200 more to that.

this estimate does not include your travelling expenses...or car related expenses.

Peacock, a request..
Can you pls change the title of your Original post. You can edit it suitbaly...change it to "LIVING" and not "LEAVING"...

Now to answer your other questions.

You said you have teenaged daughters. How old are they ? Do you have to join them in schools ?
If so then you can add some money for that purpose also
If they are all ready for college/university then you will be eligible for OSAP (if you are landing in Ontario). These are student loans issued by the Govt. of Ontario.

ON a conservative estimate, if you live only on Veg. food then for a family of 5, having daal, roti/chaawal, and a sabji every day (twice a day) + a few additional snacks here and there..should cost you no more than 400-500$ (kanjoos banke rehna padega) . If you stay close by to a supermarket, then transportation costs also will be minimized. This is beneficial esp. during winter.
An adult bus-pass in Ottawa costs you around 60$/month, So it should suffice. But if any of your daughters need to go to school you have schol buses and they offer free rides.

There are cheaper alternatives to local telecom. You can get local telefone for about $10.00 (Comwave.net) and it will cost you around 30$ for service through Bell Canada. Next, you MUST get access to an internet service. That is a necessaity if you are job hunting.
On other things, I will concur with Interceptor .

Thanks Ottwa_nerd,(I 've changed the spell error)
Reading all the -ve opinion, it can mean leaving TO, just joking,

Interceptor did mention of 1 person cost of living @ 550$ inclusive of food, is that arrangement, where you get ready cooked food , or that , you have the arrangement of kitchen and rest do it yourself?
Secondly, as it appears , probably I'll be late for sept.04, term for my daughters, can they work in the free period when they are not studying?
Can they get job? all of them have work experience in retail stores here, do they need to get certificate of experience?
Can I do without a car, I mean practically speaking is it possible?
if not how much does a used car cost, again it should serve the purpose of driving no frills?
Accomodation near a super market , is it possible , you can hire an appt. near it at the rates of 750-800$ 2BR#
Replies to all of this and other question to follow , shall help me decide on the migration with family or w\o.

Peacock,
It again depends.. You did not mention what your daughters plan to study ? High schhol ( final years ) or University first year ? If its university first year you can always join in Jan 2005 ( known as winter 2005).
I gave you a conservative estimate on what I eat. You may wish to indulge yourself once in a while. However, please be reminded that these numbers are only representative values. It will all change once you come here.

Uts easy to get accomodation near a super store. However its a tad bit expensive. 700-800$ in Toronto ?... Hmmmm it has to be on the outskirts... You wont get a decent 2 bedroom apt at that price in downtown or near major shopping malls.
Can you survive without a car ? Thats upto you to decide. Insurance costs here are pretty high and considering that you will be a new immigrant....
Add to that Gas (petrol)...and misc. expenses; that itself is a drain on your budget. However, if you absolutely feel that you need one, then you should get one.
Can they get a job ? I cant tell that. It all depends on what they are looking for ? WALMART ? ...maybe, but you should know how to play your cards well. Read some postings here in hyping your CV's before you apply for such posts.
