Dimple,
thanks for your encouraging mail
I am in architecture with a degree in it.
Smaller towns offer no jobs for this profession. My wife works around toronto and hence i am stuck around this area.
The only jobs are in the housing industry or where AutoCAD is used. Jobs are hard to come by.
I am glad that i am in a better position than all Architecture related CD's in Canada. I talked to some of them and the situation is pretty depressing. TK

Is there a professional association of architects that can help you? Also, Construction /housing industry is booming across the country - have you looked for jobs in this industry?

MR,
AFIK,
Good and decent jobs can be defined as :
1. A job which paid more than your last job and where you could save more than your last job.
2. working 9-5
3. You do things only as part of your profession.
4. you get on the job upgradation of your profession.
5. you get to climb the ladder of your profession in your office at a very reasonable time
6. you are not cheated of your wages and none of the labour laws are violated.

This is what each and every country offers but can the same be applied to Canada?

Unfortunately, it depends on the employing firm and not the country itself.

Three years ago, I was offered a mfg engr position at an auto supplier in Windsor. Pay offer was excellent (in the mid 80K) with great supplemental health benefits. They even offered to pay some $ for higher education if I wished and they had 1.5 times overtime for any hours over 44 per week. There were several reasons why I declined that offer, however, it all seems to depend on the company.

Ten years ago, I worked for a consulting firm that offered $24k in the offer letter, but paid $18k. When questioned, they simply shrugged it off. This was in Ohio, USA. On top of that, they muddled my apartment contract and I ended up with a lawsuit from the apartment management. I had to sue the company to settle the mess.

Unfortunately, exploitation happens when they see you in a position of no leverage.

MR,
I am in the booming housing industry.
You get paid $20 + an hour if you are willing to be outside in the freezing cold and do labour jobs like roof fixing, truss lifting, brick work etc..
unfortunately that was not i was educated for.
We have the Ontario Association of Architects. Thye offer no help to immigrants. All they say is that they are working on it. it will take ages...

rajand,

I saw your post and completely agree with your decision based on your personal situation. This is the correct decision and at least you had the courage to move back. You know it is not going to be easy back home and let me wish you all the best. I am from Mumbai and if I can be of any help to you, do let me know. Not that sitting here in Canada I can do much but shall try my best to assist you in any which way I can.

I did some reading on BC occupational information for Architects. Here is the link:
http://workfutures.bc.ca/profiles/profile.cfm?noc=215&lang=en&site=graphic

Apparently this industry requires architects to work longer than normal hours at times.

sidenote : Yes. we all know that it is illegal to work 72 hrs a week but what will happen if i complain. I am working as a consultant and if i complain i will have to leave the job. Even if i am on payroll, then the ESA can do nothing except to put me on EI if i quit due to this . The canadian govt. supports employers as they employ employees...

If you work for 72 hours, do they not pay you for 72 hours straight pay? Do they pay you less than your actual hours of work?

Since you are not an employee, I am not quite sure as how the overtime concept would work.
