Raj anna,
Till today, our boss has everyone on an annual salary (even for those on payroll) based on a 37.5 hour work week. he then says that 37.5 hrs. to 44 hours will not be paid. he used to pay us overtime fron 44 hrs. upwards based on the hourly are based on weekly salary/37.5 hrs. 45 days back he stopped giving us overtime at all saying that people on salary are not entitled to overtime. Now a girl in our office foughat this and now he has agreed to pay us overtime from 44 hours. i , for one, assume that my weekly salary is paid for 44 hours and not 37.5 hrs. as envisioned by my employer.
as a bonus , he has given this weekend off for all of us + free lunch (pizza) today
so this is the story.

In Ontario, Architects are not considered covered under the ESA (or Employment Standards Act). This is an exempt occupation group therefore employers do not have to stick to the standards ie/ 48 hours max work in a week or 5 days etc.

If you have questions call: Employment Standards Information Centre
416-326-7160 or 1-800-531-5551

Do you get banked time ie/ hours worked overtime are given to you to take off later??

MR,
Under the OAA (ontario association of Architects) scheme, People who are working towards their certification are exempted from certain provisions of the ESA including the max. time needed to work under labor laws. But we donot fall under that catagory since we work as Technologists and are not working to get ourselves registered.
As i said before, i can complain to ESA and win, but what will be the use? ESA only gives EI facilities when my employer is unreasonable (anyway i am not in payroll and hence not under ESA but my other collegues are). Even if the ESA says that we are allowed to be paid after 37.5 hours, the employer can lay us off and where is the next office that they can turn to? already so many desi architects are without job? Architecture is not a competitive field in Canada unless probably if you are a "Gora".

Charlie,
of course i thought of a career change. I even upgraded myself with software stuff in india but i think that Canada offers no scope for freshers.I lost all my money and am in debt and so it is like a hand to mouth existance. It is very hard to break from it.
However, i will soon get canadian passport and i am looking at Aussieland/ NZ/Gulf destinations with it.
But since my wife has a good job in Canada, there are complications.
How are you doing? you were upgrading. right? what are your plans?
Pm if you need to

Did you try to go techie in your own field? General mistake people make is that they go for programmer skills when they have never done any programming in life. So I would think software education in say autocad or other design software would be bette choice. I am not sure what software training you took. Somebody with good hands-on architectural experience and training in software that automates the work you used to do manually would present good opportunities. Just my thoughts, i could be wrong. I am speaking from experience. I worked as an accountant and made a career change in Canada. Now I implement accounting softwares. So my accounting experience does not go waste plus understanding software is easy.

Morning rain,

By "good" job I mean a job which you get based on your experience & skills & pays you a good salary as per industry standards & which gives you the satisfaction of a job well done. In India we used to work long hours without overtime so I am not much concerned with overtime but ofcourse for you to perform continuously, you do need time off for yourself & family. You also need flexibility so that you can attend to your personal stuff if required.

By "Decent" job I mean it should give satisfaction & enough money to take care of my family & save something. Might be a lower position than what I have worked at.

In both positions, if I have to clean my table or clean shelves or keep appliances shining (as my current job requires) or take out garbage I am willing to do it. In India even when I was a Sales Manager or a Director in my own company, I used to clean computers, tables, etc. & sometimes have even swept the floor to ensure that the office is clean.

Regarding professional cleaners, my company has it but they come only in the morning to clean floors & toilets. They do not empty each & every dustbin & being a busy retail company the garbage does tend to build up & we have to dump it in the main garbage bin.

Rgds.
