Canadian taxpayers had to pick up the tab (in millions) for transporting 15,000 Lebanese Canadians during the recent conflict. Desis don’t have to worry abt this for now since we don’t have dual passports.
I think it makes sense to review dual citizenship or there should be some 2/5 year law to maintain citizenship.
Why taxpayers have to take burden of people who have dedication for other country even after taking citizenship of Canada? Remember, citizenship is not a right that is privilege for immigrants.
Let me put it to you this way..
If India passed similar law whereby you loose indian citizenship after 5 yr residency condition.. would you approve of that?
Obviously no right? So Canada will now have to issue 2 types of citizenships 1. who were born in Canada and have unrestricted citizenship or 2. One who hold dual citizenship and will have residency requirements.. it's inherently discriminatory.
I think they should just make dual citizenship based on reciprocating countries. So if you want Canadian citizenship you have to let go of your previous citizenship unless Canada has special relations with host country like India or USA. Even there it's discriminatory but it's workable.. in short this ain't flying ..
Canadian Supreme court is just to the left of Fidel Castro and no way there are going to allow something this conservative in nature to stand..
I am okay with if India pass same law that you can not have citizenship if you have for other country. PIO card holds good for everything except you want to vote or become MLA/MP in India.
India will like to have dual citizenship to bring the money from Indians living abroad.
I think for security reasons, tax payer liabilities, records, good for Canada (if people live here than more business, jobs, revenue) dual citizenship needs to review by govt.
