Hi Folks,
I just got my Canadian Citizenship and travelling to India next week.
How long it takes to get OCI if I apply from Toronto Office?
Should I take Indian Visa in the mean time? Transition time as I am going to India?
Lets say if I move premanantly to India, is it better to apply for OCI from Canada or India?
Please help, your detailed explanation would be appreciated.

It is better for you to apply for tourist visa (immediately) if you are travelling to India next week. When you got your candian citizenship, you must have surrendered your PRC.

You need to have a Canadian Passport to travel now as you are a canadian citizen. And for visit to India you need a tourist visa. Forget about OCI for now if you are travelling next week as you said

I doubt about getting the Indian visa with in a week ..
They generally send the visa back ONLY by post ...So if you have not purchased your tickets yet dont do it till you get your visa ...OCI takes anywhere from 3 - 12 weeks ..

One can use Express/Priority Mail. Within a day delivery of Canada Post.

From the http://www.cgitoronto.ca/
All visas for tourism and visiting relatives, for Canadians born in Canada and Canadians of Indian origin, received by this office till 14th January, 2008 have been mailed back on 15th January, 2008.

But if you wanna go following weekend, you must act now and send. Dont wait any further.

Do you have a Canadian passport yet? I hope you have put your Canadian passport application in fast track option and mentioned the travel dates with copies of tickets there.

You should call or go to the Indian consulate and explore what options you have. Not sure if they can give you an emergency visa.

I would have been in the same situation but I avoided it by informing CIC of travel and not taking oath (and surrending PR) before I went to and returned back from India.

CD's ,
I am applying for OCI next week.
The Indian Counsulate website of Toronto says that they admit only 45 people per day for OCI and that the head count takes places at 8:00 am.
Any expereinces as to how early I should reach there?
I know by common sense that I should not line up on a Monday or Friday since out of the area people are more likely to line up on those dates than others.
Real situations would be much appriciated.

Reminds me of the queue in front of the Ration offices 15 years back when Sugar and kerosene was delivered..
