And you let go of your patriotism ... which is same as anyone else who feels very patriotic till the time he has to make a personal choice and desert the country ... I see no difference here between you and your husband ..Each put country behind them when it came to making a choice ... poor patriotism. :)

Yeah that is true .. everyone loves India even the 85% corrupt people over there who are eating the country like a termite including politicians , bureaucrats .. every one alike ... but when it comes to personal selfishness vs doing something for India , they put patriotism in the back seat ......... poor patriotism :)

Patriotism is not in overlooking the -ves of your country but in recognizing them and trying to remove them !!

Arnab Ray wrote in his blog....worth reading. Dedicated to Fido.

self-loathing, “India sucks” type here abroad? You bet there are. But for each one of them, I can show you one homelander who feels the exact same way. And for every NRI who does nothing for the country, you will definitely find one homelander who does exactly that.

In today’s globalized world, in which where one stays and works is merely an accident of convenience and opportunity, belittling someone’s love for their country and their contribution to it, purely on the basis of where they live, is intellectual laziness at the best.

And a sneering “I am better than you” at the worst.

Indians in India are the worst. They are hypocrites. They will criticise India All the time talking about corruption, population, pollution, inflation, politician, law and order, dadagiri, gundagiri etc. they will try to ape the west and try to live a pseudo western life.

But as a NRI if you go back and say exactly the same thing they are already saying about India and criticise India like they are already doing. They will suddenly gang up on you and become all patritotic and start singing the praises of India ! They will say who the hell is this guy ? What does he think of himself, just bcoz he lives abroad ? Who gave him the right to criticize India ( although they are criticising India even worse than you )
This guy is acting smart and has a superiority complex, bcoz he lives abroad !

So as a NRI beware when you go back ! Only the locals can criticize India, but NOT you since you are foreign returned smart ass NRI, so you should only sing the praises of India otherwise you are a traitor and unpatriotic for leaving India..lol..and they will gang up on you for saying anything bad about India !

Its OK for Satyajit Ray and Indian film makers to show the poverty in India, but if a foreigner makes a film showing the truth with " Slum Dog Millionaire " , suddenly its bad for the image of India and they are only showing bad things about India, so lets ban that film !

Not only that. When you're visiting India and want to follow the rules, your own friends/family/relatives won't even let you do that (Paagal ho gaya hey yeh 'Angrez'). An example. I was driving with a close relative of mine in his car and after having a Banana, I kept the shell in my hands since I wanted to throw the peel in some Garbage can and once the Car stops. He was driving and seeing the garbage in my hand asked me as to why I was still keeping it. I told him the reason. He smiled and took it from my hands and threw it out of the Car window - right on the road. Mind it, it was the Lutyen's Delhi, which is as Neat, Clean, and Green as Canada. I was astonished and couldn't say anything.

So, damn if you do, damn you don't.

Patriotism is one thing, but it doesn't mean I can't even have a right to bad mouth the country's ills and whatever is wrong with it. Yes, I deliberately said 'bad mouth', for such a Sorry state of affairs back home. It doesn't mean I don't feel emotional and carry India on my sleeves for whatever is great about it, albeit little and the fact that I have a home there with my siblings that I love/care so much.

You know many a times I have wondered why there's so less corruption here ...

I know AT would start his rant now :) ... but at a general day to day level , you don't offer bribe or under the table favors / money to get things done ....

Try giving a bus driver $2 to let you have the bus ride without paying the fare. Or a cop $50/- bill on a speeding offense .. ;)

My 2nd day out of India when I went for an ID document in Bahrain , I was surprised that the process happened straight forwardly in a queue with no one jumping or being taken ahead out of turn and No one asked me for any bribe ... which I was so used to in India :(

Frankly speaking, in 2000, I was dealing with all top authorities like RBI top official for remittance, bank officials and shipping top authorities in Bombay port and JNPT, I never paid any bribe to anybody. Allmy remittance files were cleared without hassle. In all 14 yrs of working, I have not paid a single penny as a bribe. :D
