I asked you the french question for a certain reason and was pretty sure what the answer would be.
Like you I too am only desi in a MNC and do exactly similar job as you do....et je parle francais aussie !!!!!!
I certainly disagree with you Jake but reader s can make their own mind.

DIE HARD !
AND SO THE CASE RESTS!
But I just can't get away without adding my experience today. I am training in a new job for last 10 days and have been doing, if not the best on each individual count, almost the best overall! (theory and practical). This morning when I went for training, this accent topic was so much on my mind that I carried it along all day. During the afternoon, we had to do some mock role play and with the desi discussion in mind, involuntarily I tried to change my accent - and guess what---failed miserably in delivering what I am sure I knew better than anyone else in the class!
I asked for another chance - and even with a slower delivery, I did worse! The colleagues and the trainer all remarked - Hey Chandresh, what's happened to you today - you have been doing everything great all these days and today you just can't express yourself. Why?
How could I tell them about the Canadian Desi discussion - how could I tell them I am trying to be you guys and giving up the reasonably good communication skills I have that you have found good in last ten days! How???
I only told them that it's the terrible weather today due to which I am having a sever cold and headache!

Exactly!! You've nailed it. That's what happens when people become too conscious about accent, they lose focus on content. Jumbled up content delivered in a flawless Canadian accent is nonsense nevertheless and unless the person on the other side of the table is inherently stupid, he/she will know right away.
Besides, to expect newly arrived immigrants to suddenly pick up a Canadian accent is unrealistic. It can only be done gradually, if one is keen on it.
The more important thing to do as Jake has pointed out is to work on clarity and confidence. It also helps to learn everyday words and phrases quickly and use them appropriately.
I do agree with ChorPerMor on the French point though, it gives you a big edge.

hmmmmmmmm what do they in India
Kaua chala hans kee chaal to apni chaal bhi bhoola!!
No one has asked anyone to speak with American accent....it is not possible to change accent that dramatically once you are over puberty
The advise is just to bring it closer to the way people speak here and not 20000 kms away. Why give a chance to someone to reject you when odds are stacked against you already? It is one thing for guys like us, well settled already, to dicuss such issues and consider them important or trivial; it could be a matter of life or death for a new immigrant who has not found a job in 6 weeks and is looking at his life savings fleeting away.
et monsieur Jake, se habla espanole un pokito but thats it.........can't handle more than 6 languages.
Blue Bhai regarding your commentBesides, to expect newly arrived immigrants to suddenly pick up a Canadian accent is unrealistic"
I agree but isn't it unrealistic to ask for Canadian experience from a new immigrant? Has that stopped anyone from asking it?
By the way this accent part is only a small part of picture.......what happened to main discussion about why desis struggle? No more inputs from anyone else.
