Mishtar
If you are in US already then why don't you test the waters yourself ?
You should be able to apply for Canadian jobs online, just make sure to provide a canadian phone number and address.
The response you get will tell you whether there is any scope for you or not. The world is small place now a days, isn't it? Avoid stating that you are in US at present or may wanna mention that you want to move back to Canada.

I will also ask same question to others who keep on asking about their chances of finding a job. In this age of Information, if a person sitting in a small village in Bihar can hack and deface a museum in Rome(Its a true story) why can't you prepare canadian resumes by looking at some of resumes that are already online and send some of your resumes to job postings you see? The response you will get will convince you more than a 1000 posts on this message board.

Mishtar_India,

You do bring up a good point here. The forecast for the initial years in Canada isn't sunny at all and the ground reality hardly rosy. But what about the ground reality in India?

Isn't it the same exact situation there too? Pick up a newspaper today anywhere in the world and you'll read about the blistering rate of progress in India. The job market is flourishing, FOREX reserves are through the roof and the economy has never been better. Even Paul Martin mentioned the Indian economy in his first speech and how Canada needs to compete. So imagine what kind of picture someone who has never been to India would coujure up.

But only we know the ground reality there. Unless you are one of the fortunate few with the money and the connections, life is very difficult there. For the majority living below the poverty line, there is hardly much hope. And statistically, if you're part of the middle-class, your chances of making it big aren't too good. Engineers and B.Sc.s are a dime a dozen, B.com's are everywhere. What are you chances of getting a well paying growth oriented job (without using connections) if you graduate with a B.Com? And this explains the fact that despite all the frustrations I've heard in the past 3 years form numerous people, I haven't met a SINGLE GUY who's gone back. That's not to say nobody has gone back to India, but the percentage is negligible.

The GOOD part about India is the proximity we have with our families and the support we get from them. We understand the systems, know the rules (or lack thereof) and are able to weave our way through daily life.

That is what hits you here first when you land. You're totally on your own (unless you have relatives here who're willing to help, that is a much much better situation to be in). Besides being in unchartered territory, you lack means of transporation, don't have enough finances and you have to look for employment despite these handicaps. At the same time you have to try to keep your spirits high because you'll meet a lot of people who'll tell you that there are no jobs in Canada for you and you should have stayed back in India. The fear of uncertainty stings clear all the time.

You need to have a lot of resolve to deal with all this, you're fighting yourself as much at first as you are the sorroundings. And that is what we're trying to convey here on Canadiandesi. I don't think the idea is to discourage anyone from coming here, the idea is to arm them for the war within that will ensue once they land. To help them hit the ground running.

Peronally, I think you're making the right decision to come here and have taken all this in the right spirit. I hope others do too.

I would just like to add a small quiz here.

Asuume A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6, G=7, H=8, I=9, J=10, K=11. L=12, M=13, N=14, O=15, P=16, Q=17, R=18, S=19, T=20, U=21, V=22, W=23, X=24, Y=25, and Z =26.

Now,

K N O W L E D G E = _+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_

Fill In the blanks by figures corresponding to letter and

Total sum is

you get ___ % success

Similarly,

H A R D W O R K = _+_+_+_+_+_+_+_

Total sum is

you get ___ % success

Again

A T T I T U D E = _+_+_+_+_+_+_+_

Look at the total sum.

That would be the ___ % of your succes.

Just try it. You will realise real hard fact of the life anywhere in the world.

canada is such an orhodox country . For getting field job in canada you need REFERENCE, WHITE COLOUR and their BLOODY LANGUAGE. we do not have either of it. so forget about it and keep doing sheet work. anyways what is the meaning of writing all this?? afterall we Indians only are going to read it neither Canadian goverment nor Employer........

Like many of us have proved...while initially there is a problem it's upto the individual to market him/herself correctly. A lot of us are gainfully employed in Canada.

You are correct Jake, message post by Falguni is way to negative and any new immigrant will just get discouraged by reading such posts.

Yes is it very tough in the beginning and one should come prepared but the reason that everyone continues to struggle and does not return back to india is because they see a hope after the struggle ...

i feel, while describing the rigours of initial settlement period of canada one should also throw some light on the fact that ....in most cases ( most !) people sooner or later get settled in one feild or another and lead a far better life than they did in india.

Whenever i visit toronto i find all my friends and all known people who have recently moved or have been there for some time ...all living comfortably with good jobs ...they maynot be getting as high salaries as they would in US but it is still a good happy life ..... of course everyone started with temp jobs ...in call centers, help desk, supermarkets retial stores etc but soon all got better openings ...of the 8-10 people i personally know not one had to wait for more than 6 months for a good job ...yes there are r exceptions but i understand that it 5-6 months is a good measure ...of course in some cases it takes much longer it just depends but the fact is that thay most make thru it successfully ...if one comes from US/Europe the time period of apapting Canadian lifestyle is much shorter in mose cases.

The bottom line is that people come to Canada for a better life and future and MOST of them do get it sooner or later.:hat:

Falguni
If what you say is true then how come all thsoe desis and others born and raised in Canada get plump jobs in no time. Isn't color a matter at that time?
And how come so many of us, new immigrants, found good jobs later.
The purpose of writing all this is to let new immigrants understand what kind of reception awaits them.
