The Board members who have spent about a decade in Canada and have been helping desis settle down all these years would like to convey one simple message to always hope for the best, but be ready to face the worst while in Canada. Pls don't compare Canada with other countries.

NOBODY SEEMS TO UNDERSTAND THIS:kaioken: :shoot:

No matter how many times you tell desis that in canada your desi degrees and experience is nothing but garbage, you have to requalify, your desi degrees/exp could get you a visa but not a job. THEY WILL NOT UNDERSTAND:announce:

You will find desis who've gotten jobs in their field within the first month of landing

Some try for a while and then just give up and settle down with odd jobs
some work part time and go to school to upgrade their skills

This varies from person to person, each person has his own personality and background. Doesn't this imply in India as well??
Then why is it so difficult to understand??

For positive feedback about Canada, just call your immigration consultant :)

Honestly, you already have expectations of a better life in Canada. You already know the positive aspects of this country. That is the reason you have decided to migrate. I am among the few (on this board) who consider themselves fortunate to be in this country and am earning much more than even the average Canadian. I am even in a job/field that most Canadians find difficult to get into. I would not be anywhere else in the world right now.

However, the first 2 years were difficult and I was not ready for it. This site does give one an accurate picture of what is initially in store for most newcomers. Most people are also gracious enough to provide tips on how to survive the initial setbacks.
There is also truth in the matter that once you are over 40 a majority of people have already been through the school of hard knocks and are not prepared to do it, all over (and probably worse than the first time) again. I was just 24 when I landed 7yrs ago.My age did make a difference to where I am now.
This site seeks to educate people on such matters and empower people to weigh the matter carefully.
Ultimately, you are the only one who can decide what is good for you. However, you do need the information to make the decision. This site creates a balance to the rosy and unrealistic picture created by a lot of immigration consultants and your own head:).

wah
For the first time I see above two posts as MOST GENUINE and usefull ones of all.
I myself am getting SICK of this stupid attitude of Desis in India thinking somehow we are all a bunch of losers here or are trying to protray a negative side of immigration. No matter how nicely many of us have explained what is going on, no matter how much time someone has spent on explaining nicely, desis just wont give a damn!
This is ridiculous.
instead of understanding that we are trying to make them aware of the realities ahead, they are simply more insterested in trying to find what are their chances of finding a job in their chosen profession.

Friends, thank you for correcting me ...you are right ...i maybe having too rosy a picture of Canada in my mind ....

I really appreciate you all trying to make new to be immigrants aware of the ground realities there ... but even though situation is really bad there .... is the supply/demand ratio of jobs, school, housing, electricity worse than india?

with 8.8% unemployment rate in india total number of unemployed people is twice the population of canada!!...despite that we were still able to find a foothold and a job...so why cant we do so in canada?

You may say that our degrees are worth garbage ...but does that make our abilities garbage too ...not at all !!! ...otherwise they would not let us migrate...do not underestimate the indian education... we only need a break to prove our worth and it may take a long while to get that break...if one is more productive than others and sincerely hardworking then lesser people would discriminate us...btw there is discrimination everywhere just the degree of it varies from place to place ...even in india there is dicrimination based on state..language etc etc .. ..is there not ?

If i decide to move ( yes, if!... this has got me thinking) i do expect hardships...but i was taking it to be a 1-2 yr sacrifice to make a better future for family and myself... if after 2 yrs i fail to get any headway and still stay stuck in a minimum wage job then i'd think i really goofed up...but i dont want to chicken out now and then repent all my life that i did not tryout the oppertunity.

maybe i am still wrong..I'd appreciate your comments .

Mishtar
Sorry to say yaar you and other desis need to learn how to read posts and UNDERSTAND them.
No one is talking about prejudice or racism or unemployment in Canada.
All all these posts are trying to tell YOU, THE PROSPECTIVE IMMIGRANTS, that please come prepared as the first 2-3 years are hard as hell, come prepared so that you have enogh money to support you and your family, come prepared so that you have a proper action plan to settle in and get a good job, come prepared so that you know what exactly a minimum wage job is, how difficult it is to find and maintain and manage to live with that income, come prepared so that you and your family members know what lies ahead.
And aim for a VERY PERIOD of 3-5 years. You may be lucky to get a break within 2 months or two years. And do understand what practical life in canada is.
For heaven's sake read and understand what everyone is telling you, no one is asking you to stay back.
Already because of this ridiculous attitude of desis, many users have stopped posting so better take note NOW

Mishtar,
Some people have a different style of delivery so they may sound more negative than they mean. Do not stay back. Since you have the opportunity, yes please try it out. Frankly, I even preferred the 7$/hr life(6 yrs ago) here over the 30000rs/month (7 yrs ago that was a bigger amount than it is now) in India.
Like I mentioned in another post, most people (rightly or wrongly) like to be defined by what they do and how much they make. This, in many cases, blocks out every other positive that the country has to offer. The truth remains that, in most cases, there is a difference between ones expectations and the reality.
In how many hotels have you cleaned plates in India? How many factories have you worked in as a labourer?. Like you said...inspite of statitics you have not had to do those jobs in India. What we are trying to say is that you may have to take up the above mentioned jobs here and to be prepared for the same. Just consider it a stop on your way up and you'll be ok.

Jake, thanks for your gracious responce...
i am prepared for hardships ...whatever job it takes to get going in the beginning ...i am coming with low expectations .

I m in US and have to chose between going to india or to canada at this time ...i am opting for canada... as as you have warned... i m mentally prepared for long hard slog before getting a break...believe me your responses really help those who are about to take the plunge.
i am single ( will be getting married next yr) so if i have to struggle again better i do it now than later in life....

im in a non IT feild( building engineering/ construction) ... i am hoping that my US experience of 4 yrs will help me somewhat later on in canada ...but i am also preparing for the worse to start with..

if you have any idea of the prospects and prevailing conditions in the construction/bldg engeneering feild in canada i'll greatly appreciate.
