Hi All,
I wish to remain neutral but let us examine this situation from a scientic point of view.
Imagine if you explaining the principles of chemical engineering to a class of eager students.
Do you explain that in reaction 1 reactant A is treated with reactant B and Yahoo the chemistry of the process is so impressed that a compound C is formed.
In reaction 2 reactant C reacts with D and lo and behold Eureka compound E is formed.
So class God is great, chemistry is great and the most important step for a successful reaction to take place is to make sure that you spend hours on the internet and develop a procedure to keep the reaction flasks clean so you can impress the president of the college.
Will anyone who has studied in a top notch engineering school describe a chemical process as I have done above.
The most analytical method of doing this would be to explain to the class as follows:
1. Ensure before placing reactant A in a flask that it is clean and there are no residual impurities.
2. Explain what should be the molar concentrations of A and B so that they react to form C.
3.What is the rate of the reaction and what is the reaction time going to be, will it be 5 mins, 60 mins or 24 hours?
4. Is it an exothermic or endothermic reaction? If its an exothermic reaction should an energy balance be done to calculate the heat of reaction to prevent an explosive reaction from taking place. Or why calculate the heat of reaction, why not just show the chemical equations to that nice girl at the check in counter , if she is impressed with it then that should boost our confidence and we can proceed with the reaction. ( Commonsense dictates that I should show these equations to a person who has good if not better knowledge then me either someone who has better qualifications then me or someone who has expertise in chemistry by years of experience)
5. Is it a reversible or irreversible reaction?
6. Will it follow Lechateliers principle?
7. What is the intial pH and final pH will it be too acidic or alkaline?
8. What should be the expected yield of the reaction and the % conversion of A and B into C.
So if I were to post a success story I would have followed a certain protocol or procedure:
1. Give a brief background about my qualifications which field of engineering this is important since the demand for ceramic engineers is not the same as that for biomedical engineers.
2. Did I study in IIT, IISC, Bits Pilani, UDCT, REC's, IIM's, Jamnalal Bajaj or Xaviers Institute of management.
3. How many years of experience do I have and do I possess an expertise in a particular area say for example in stem cell research or in SAP implementation in Sales and distribution module.
4. If I was in marketing area did I try to develop Canadian accent and mannerisms? Was I in regular contact with Americans/ Canadians that I could imbibe these qualities which are so essential in marketing but which may not be important in chemical process designing.
5. Considering the fact that if I am so successful in Canada then the converse should hold true and I should have been successful in India too. If that is the case then why would I stay in a house with 3 families togather. And why would I use an old pentium 1 for sending out resumes why not use my lap top or get a new desktop since it costs below $800.
6.Make a brief mention of the questions which were put across to me and how did I manage to clinch the deal in every case. Was I successful in my previous companies to sell products to fortune 500 companies.
7. Whom did I mention in my references since this plays a vital role in securing a job?
Remember when you listen to a cricket commentary they describe how the shot was played by the batsman, what was the lenght of the ball, was it an inswinger or outswinger etc.
No one would listen to a commentrator if he just mentioned over no 1: 4 runs, 6 runs, 6 runs, over no 32: 6 runs, 6 runs and so God is great and India has won the match.
Thanks and regards,
Nikhil

Good one Nikhil.....

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.

Nicely put. Your have responsibly made your point and you did not have to call anybody a clown or mock them.

Hi Jack3d,
You are right.
BTW, I have never used such type of language. Also see the language of BL and crenshaw and also comment out them too.

If I have to choose beween BL and KAP/DTC opinions(which only deride). I'd place my bets on BL!
