Actually, the couple is not quite impressed with the medical service here. She had a minor problem related to her pregnancy recently and they did not have a good experience at the hospital. They were made to wait for 10 hours before they could even see a doctor! And looks like nobody from their family (parents or in-laws) can make it to Canada due to responsibilities in India. So they are in a fix.

Anyway, I have passed on these inputs to them. They are still deciding.

I share similar opinions IMHO and while discussing it with some Desi's.
Even when you are on the pangs of shild birth, these idiots will advise you to just go home. They donot admit anyone in the hospital unless you have 10 cm. dilation simply b'cos the hospitals are over crowded and they donot have sufficient doctors. Since it is universal health care we donot have choice. They also have clear notices across the hospitals which say that if you make any trouble, police will be called. Also most nurses are so mechanical in nature that they donot give the necessary help. again this depends on the hospital and it will vary as per your luck. My friends have had better luck when it comes to downtown hospitals and worse experience when it comes to Trillium, St. Joseph's etc...
Once when I called up the Gynacologist to inform about a post birth problem, the Gynacologist would not even take up my call. Then we had to go to an emergency when we had to wait 12 hours with 5 day old baby. The put us in a room and then no one even came near us . The Gync. came after 11 hours and told that she was sorry that she came so late. She just was with us for 2 mins. and told us to go home. When we said that we have to be admitted so that what the gync. during child birth messed up has to be put right / patient has to be monitored, she said that she canot do that and just left.
Again all this can be summed up with the following words of a nurse "When whites give birth, the go home within 24 hours and never come again. why is it that you Desi's have so many problems?"
Again all this IMO. There have also been many desi's who happily accept the health care given to them by this country and donot complain.

Peace

Incorrect.

Personally, knock on wood, we have never had a single bad experience.

I have had to go to specialists for whom I never had to wait.
We have a family physician where we usually have to wait for 10-15 max.
We had to rush to the Trillium emergency once where we were tended to within 30 minutes
A visit to the walk-in was all but unpleasant.
Our daughter turned 1 yesterday and my wife will vouch for the stellar experience with her OB-GYN through her pregnancy, the delivery at St.Josephs and care from the pediatrician...each one has been super good and I say this neither with a pinch of exageration nor only to contradict your point.

So, we are not just accepting of it but thankful.

That said...
Again, not to go of on a tangent but I am only compelled to state my good experience in as much detail - which seems to be polar opposite to yours - just so people new to Canada who visit CD and read such posts can get both sides of the story.

I am not saying Canadian healthcare is perfect because of my experience and I don't think anyone should conclude it as bad as reflected from your experiences.

Given your luck, you could have suffered just as badly anywhere on this planet. I hope things get better for you. Good luck.

TK

Here in canada care is based on emergency .. not on individuals demands..

This is assesed by the nurse at the emerg..The nurse decided it was not something that needs immidiate attention..

If u think u are in emergency call an ambulance.. dont walk to emergency..
People here treat emergencies like walkin clinic and this has resulted in the 10hrs wait..

There are pros and cons of every system..

On a related note, I am aware of a person who is pregnant and lives in the town west of the GTA where there are not many Gync's available and for immigrants without a family doctor the local hospital allots a gync. who takes immigrants since none of the long time residents ever use her. The family checked the doctor feedback sites and the site mostly had very bad comments about her. Also personally all the immigrants who had used this Gync. have had mostly horrible experiences with this person. The town hospital has a firm rule that once a Gync. is alotted, they canot be changed by the user. Also this town has no doctors who are accepting new patients.
Therefore this person who is pregnant wants to know if she can use a doctor in India and then charge the bill to Ohip. The last time I saw the bill the hospital charged $850 a day for the room rent alone (incl. food) and this does not incl. the delivery charges. has any desi been in this situation before.
Also what I advised this individual (who works in this town) that she should move to Toronto once her maternity leave kicks in. This would anyway work for the person as she plans to leave Canada after 3 months after the baby is born for a period of 9 months and we are talking about delivery on May 02/2009. Both the woman and spouse are cdn. citizens.,
