What should we do to the Indian passport once we get canadian citizenship?

Hey,
I was wondering what should I do with my Indian passport after I got my canadian citizenship.
Someone said to me that I should return it to indian consulate when applying for OCI.
Is it true?
can't I just give copies of my indian passport to OCI instead?

When you will apply for your visa or OCI, Indian High Commission will ask for your Indian Passport, cancell it and return back to you.
some of my friends from pakistan use pakistani passport while going to pakistan and use canadian passport while coming back to canada.Can someone tell me why the same thing cannot be done using indian passport also ? Why do they cancel the indian passport while issuing visa or PIO or OCI ? Does it mean that we lose the indian citizenship when we apply for visa on canadian passport ? Does it deny us from applying for any govt job in india or applying to any indian university (with tution fees same as that of indian citizens)

When you enter India, if you use Indian passport, you will be let in, of course. When you leave India, you will be asked to show your status in Canada during checking in AND during emigration check.
By showing your Indian passport, your status in Canada can be proved via a valid visa or a PR card (PR stamp in passport is not valid). However, as a Cdn citizen you will not have either of them in your possession. So how will you leave India ?
If you use your Canadian passport, then the Indian authorities at emigration will want to see an Indian visa on your Cdn passport and an entry stamp on your Cdn passport. You will not have that since you used Indian passport to enter the country in the first place. Now, they will want to know why you entered India illegally.
Remember, India does not recognize dual citizenship even though a lot of us define OCI as dual citizenship while it is not.
Obviously, I don't know if Pakistan allows dual citizenship. If they do, sure, the person can use and must use the respective country's passports to gain entry.

Pakistan uses dual citizenship in the real sense.
