Construction Superintendents and Project managers bring in over 100K per year.

The issue of immigrants getting jobs in their field is very multi-faceted and is not as simple as just "its racism" or whatever.

MR,

Nothing is wrong in doing manual labour work, its just I would want a little more comfort in my life....:). Moreover I did work hard to get the education so that I can have that comfort during my 'working years' and later.

Money and success are very subjective. $37 may mean a lot to someone and nothing to a lot of other people. I had a contractual position in Toronto that paid me 35 an hour and trust you me, I was anything but satisfied....I always felt that I am wasting the prime of my life making that kind of money. So I did what I had to do...got my passport and drove down south...:)

And regarding your comment that immigrants not getting jobs is not 'just racism'. I find it some kind of unexplained arrogance about not recognizing forgein education. As if the network protocols that someone studied in India are somehow different and substandard when it comes to a 'Canadian' network or the syntax of C++ is actually taught in some other language.

My comments were not directed to you about manual work, but towards TK.

My comments regarding salaries of various occupations was simply to show that people who do manual labour, or work with their hands rather than in an office position also make good money. Again this was not directed at you.

do you find arrogance in my words..or what is out here? I didnt get it from your post.

Thanks.

I know that was not directed towards me MR. No offence taken.

And no, I didn't find arrogance in your words at all. I meant arrogance on part of a typical Canadian employer (remember Canadian work experience thing?).

Take care!!

No one likes to be in a manual labour job or even in a CSR position. It is only that these positions are filled mostly by qualified professional people who canot get a professional job and use these kind of jobs as transitional / put food on the table.
Do you know how hard these jobs can be and how they can put tremendous mental and psycological stress upon professional, qualified immigrants?
Yes. I know that Registered massage therapists earn $37 per hour and doctors can make $200 an hour in Canada. But the question is, how are the barriers for foreign trained doctors to get certified in Canada and how easy will it be for an immigrant who is a registered massage therapist (first we have to see the cost) to find a job that will pay $37 an hour? Yesh. Plumbers make $30 or $40 + an hour but will a DGM of a company learn the plumbing course in Canada, get certified, get customers and do the plumbing of a toilet?
These are the things that are of main concern.
Putting a blanket statement does not give all the facts..

Isnt this like the pot calling the kettle black?

Interestingly I know many people that are passionate about their careers and jobs doing these kinds of "Manual" labour jobs.

Oh ok. Yes there still is ignorance and bias out there unfortunately , but there are a lot of success stories out there ! even if 1 out of 5 isnt a success story, 4 out of 5 are !!!

Remember people obtain jobs for various reasons and remain unemployed for various reasons as well. Not all of the unemployed or underemployed (those working in jobs for which they are overqualified) are immigrants.

To the OP

Once you come here with that background of yours,(like age +40, good position) you will regret within months, or may be in weeks, people say so many things, unless you hate India, or you have a great problem with the corruption etc. There is one thing I am sure you will feel is the disappointment, more so your field is simply is an average field. So many things against you, like age, status, money and convenience.

Tks advise is worth usd5000, I wish someone has given me that advise,I would have saved the money I paid to the lawyer.

Best thing I suggest is be where you are, send your daughter for higher studies here.I say this because I met so many people regretting . All this talks of staying positive, etc, melts even in the -20 snow.

The worst thing is once you come here you cannot go anywhere even to India.

There have been success stories and there have been failures - there are people satisfied here and there are people who feel that they were better off in India . Decide which category you belong to and what are your bench marks for deciding further course of action .

As a thumb rule migrating over 40 may not turn out benefecial although I know people who have proved this wrong .

Take a leave for 2 months , apply and try to get a job working 7 hours a day submitting resumes and taking calls . Most likely if you are in demand , things should click in 1-2 months with agressive efforts . If not then chances of their clicking are less likely . I would not suggest a new Immigrant to take survival jobs initially as that eats their effort of successfully trying for a job in their own field which further results in a vicious circle .

MR ~ Jobs have monetary satisfaction and job satisfaction / esteem value .Though tradesmen may earn good money , but you would seldom find them not yearning a professional career which does not happen vice versa . Life and career is all about growth .

Hi,
I could not resist to contribute my 2 cents.

You can definitely live a decent life (may not be a decent lifestyle) even with a family income of 60K/Year.

"Kahan aake rukne the raaste; kahan mod tha use bhool ja,
Woh jo mil gaya, use yaad rakh; jo nahin mila, use bhool ja,
Woh jo tere naseeb ki baarishen; kisi aur chhatt pe baras gayin,
Dil-e-be-khabar, meri baat maan; use bhool ja, use bhool ja."

.

This is what I have to really decide upon. Whether to land with 10K or with 150 - 200K?

Will it really help if I have the additional moolah with me?

Very well said............... SanjeevM-------------abt the shero-shayari

Hi,
Thanks for appreciating the sher but it is a Haqeeqat and the sooner you realize, the better it is.
I do not want to 'sound negative' here but I am trying to be more realistic. To me, Canada definitely is a land of opportunity but its not cheap to find one.

Positive attitutde.....hmmm....let me ask you few questions, answer them very very honestly (at least to yourself):
* Have you ever washed dishes in your home?
* Have you ever cleaned the whole house without the help of a Bai?
* Have you ever cleaned bathrooms and toilet seats?
* Are you the person who would die hungry but not eat any frozen food?
* Have you ever cooked breakfast or do you enjoy cooking?
* How much are you habitual and/or dependent on others for your day to day work?
* Are you a kind of 'father' who has given 'Khulli Chhutti' to your daughter as far her friends/outings/parties are concerned or are you a father who 'does not want to listen' any crap from your daughter (yes, sometimes, its going to be a practical problem, I am telling you when she will be exposed to 'Canadian' culture and friends). You should have patience and skill to deal with a Canadian Teenage daughter.
* If I put you to work (just for 6 months) with the call centre agents (18-25 years old) and your supervisor 'may be' a single mother, 23 who has gracefully graduated from her high school and she 'may be' living with her second boyfriend because her kid's dad was even worse than her first boyfriend but he(dad) is still in touch with her and visits her sometimes to see the kid and take him(kid) to Wonderland or a day picnic, will you or will you not feel even for a second that OMG, what kind of culture is this? OR I know far better than my supervisor, she is just a kiddd and I had 50 people working under me in India like her? OR why did I come here? Am I supposed to do all these small jobs? I am not fresh 'high school graduate'?

OR

Will you enjoy the situation and the culture thinking this is what it is, man!! I am in Canada now. After three years, I'll get my Candian passport and I can travel to more than 100 countries in the world without VISA requirement......YAAAHHHOOOOO!!!! I love this country!
So what, If I am not a DGM here; so what if we have no 'Bai' to help my wife for house hold work; so what if I can not afford going to a '3 star and above Hotel/restaurant' once in every two/three weeks; so what if I always think of SAVING 'loonie here and toonie there'; so what if I look forward to go to Gurudwara/Temple so that our family will be attached to our culture and 'sanskaars' and also my wife have some relief because she will not have to cook food at home, we'll have langar at gurudwara/temple; so what if most of people I meet are busy everyday and have no time other than weekend; so what if there is one BIG festival which is celebrated evey weekend or every second weekend with full 'josh and umang' and that festival is 'GROCERY FESTIVAL' and the whole family looks forward to that. so what......so what.........

* How much do you believe in GOD? How religious are you?

If you have good money like $150-200K, that would certainly help but I would suggest, please do not spend that money right away. Try to understand the situation, get familiar with the system, DECIDE what you want to do, whether you want to make Canada your and your next generations' permanent home or not? See, earning $1 in India means you are earning 40 Rs.; here spending 80 Rs. is 'JUST a toonie', are you getting me what I am saying? Just loonie, just toonie karte karte jeb kab khali ho jaati hai, pata hi nahin chalta.
Based on my experience, I can say that once someone DECIDES to migrate, no one can stop him (other than GOD HIMSELF), not even all those 'negative and realistic' feedbacks, so if you have already decided to come here and you get lot of feedback about 'not coimng here', WILL YOU STOP? WILL YOU NOT MIGRATE?
The only thing is that you will have to come with such a feeling that the moment you boarded your plane, your old memories were gone. It will be your new birth here but this time you will be born young. More you will keep remebering your past life, more you may be depressed. Still, many many employers wouldn't recognize your education and experience. Many may call you for an interview but when they see you, thay may decide not to give you the job, you might be 'overqualified' or 'the job may not be suitable to you' and all those things........but you will have to come with a poisitve attitude, you know......'so what' attitude. Keep trying! Refer back to 'Spider and the king' story........

I wish you all the very best and in case, you need any help, just let me know.

Being a DGM in a company in India with all the perks, etc will be really disappointed here. Forget DGM, getting a Manager position would be very hard. Work culture in India and Canada are different. It takes time to understand how things work in Canada. Working for 20+ years, one would have adjusted to the working env. and the habits die hard.

As JRF mentioned, there may be top brasses in Canada who are foreign educated. But they all may have come some time back. They did not land in Canada and became a top brass. They have put on years of service and effort in this country. They may have gone to school here or taken couple of courses, who knows.

If someone is content and happy in a place, why bother moving?
