Construction Superintendents and Project managers bring in over 100K per year.
The issue of immigrants getting jobs in their field is very multi-faceted and is not as simple as just "its racism" or whatever.
MR,
Nothing is wrong in doing manual labour work, its just I would want a little more comfort in my life..... Moreover I did work hard to get the education so that I can have that comfort during my 'working years' and later.
Money and success are very subjective. $37 may mean a lot to someone and nothing to a lot of other people. I had a contractual position in Toronto that paid me 35 an hour and trust you me, I was anything but satisfied....I always felt that I am wasting the prime of my life making that kind of money. So I did what I had to do...got my passport and drove down south...
And regarding your comment that immigrants not getting jobs is not 'just racism'. I find it some kind of unexplained arrogance about not recognizing forgein education. As if the network protocols that someone studied in India are somehow different and substandard when it comes to a 'Canadian' network or the syntax of C++ is actually taught in some other language.
My comments were not directed to you about manual work, but towards TK.
My comments regarding salaries of various occupations was simply to show that people who do manual labour, or work with their hands rather than in an office position also make good money. Again this was not directed at you.
do you find arrogance in my words..or what is out here? I didnt get it from your post.
Thanks.

No one likes to be in a manual labour job or even in a CSR position. It is only that these positions are filled mostly by qualified professional people who canot get a professional job and use these kind of jobs as transitional / put food on the table.
Do you know how hard these jobs can be and how they can put tremendous mental and psycological stress upon professional, qualified immigrants?
Yes. I know that Registered massage therapists earn $37 per hour and doctors can make $200 an hour in Canada. But the question is, how are the barriers for foreign trained doctors to get certified in Canada and how easy will it be for an immigrant who is a registered massage therapist (first we have to see the cost) to find a job that will pay $37 an hour? Yesh. Plumbers make $30 or $40 + an hour but will a DGM of a company learn the plumbing course in Canada, get certified, get customers and do the plumbing of a toilet?
These are the things that are of main concern.
Putting a blanket statement does not give all the facts..

And no, I didn't find arrogance in your words at all. I meant arrogance on part of a typical Canadian employer (remember Canadian work experience thing?).
Take care!!

To the OP
Once you come here with that background of yours,(like age +40, good position) you will regret within months, or may be in weeks, people say so many things, unless you hate India, or you have a great problem with the corruption etc. There is one thing I am sure you will feel is the disappointment, more so your field is simply is an average field. So many things against you, like age, status, money and convenience.
Tks advise is worth usd5000, I wish someone has given me that advise,I would have saved the money I paid to the lawyer.
Best thing I suggest is be where you are, send your daughter for higher studies here.I say this because I met so many people regretting . All this talks of staying positive, etc, melts even in the -20 snow.
The worst thing is once you come here you cannot go anywhere even to India.
There have been success stories and there have been failures - there are people satisfied here and there are people who feel that they were better off in India . Decide which category you belong to and what are your bench marks for deciding further course of action .
As a thumb rule migrating over 40 may not turn out benefecial although I know people who have proved this wrong .
Take a leave for 2 months , apply and try to get a job working 7 hours a day submitting resumes and taking calls . Most likely if you are in demand , things should click in 1-2 months with agressive efforts . If not then chances of their clicking are less likely . I would not suggest a new Immigrant to take survival jobs initially as that eats their effort of successfully trying for a job in their own field which further results in a vicious circle .
MR ~ Jobs have monetary satisfaction and job satisfaction / esteem value .Though tradesmen may earn good money , but you would seldom find them not yearning a professional career which does not happen vice versa . Life and career is all about growth .

Hi,
I could not resist to contribute my 2 cents.
You can definitely live a decent life (may not be a decent lifestyle) even with a family income of 60K/Year.
"Kahan aake rukne the raaste; kahan mod tha use bhool ja,
Woh jo mil gaya, use yaad rakh; jo nahin mila, use bhool ja,
Woh jo tere naseeb ki baarishen; kisi aur chhatt pe baras gayin,
Dil-e-be-khabar, meri baat maan; use bhool ja, use bhool ja."
.
This is what I have to really decide upon. Whether to land with 10K or with 150 - 200K?
Will it really help if I have the additional moolah with me?

Being a DGM in a company in India with all the perks, etc will be really disappointed here. Forget DGM, getting a Manager position would be very hard. Work culture in India and Canada are different. It takes time to understand how things work in Canada. Working for 20+ years, one would have adjusted to the working env. and the habits die hard.
As JRF mentioned, there may be top brasses in Canada who are foreign educated. But they all may have come some time back. They did not land in Canada and became a top brass. They have put on years of service and effort in this country. They may have gone to school here or taken couple of courses, who knows.
If someone is content and happy in a place, why bother moving?
