I am thinking of going with Acanac (DSL). They advertized the ATA for aout $70. Can I buy this device elsewhere and cheaper? Are the other ATA devices compatible with Acanac, or I need to buy from them? I normally buy my tech stuff from online, which is much cheaper.

Febpreet ,

In order to have DSL internet w/o a Bell phone line , you need to have a dry loop which is rented by Bell @ $8/month .

If however you take such a DSL from Bell , they waive the $8 fee but not for any other provider (like Acanac)

Acanac offers free internet based phone line which is independent of above.

Thanks Fido, so you're saying if I go with Acanac, I don't need to buy the ATA as the phone is connected through internet? But how? Don't you need a device to hook up the phone to the internet modem/router?

Sorry to be pest, as I have absolutely no idea about it all.

Febpreet if you use VOIP phone, you will need ATA. Usually companies do not support or cooperate well if you do not buy the ATA from them.

Internet can be provided via regular landline phone, which is called DSL. Now, if you want only internet coming to you using the landline and do not want regular landline phone service, it is dry loop and usually companies charge extra for it.

Now if the internet is provided through cable, it has nothing to do with landline service, so there is nothing called dry loop associated with it. Cable pricing is usually higher than DSL and offers more speed.
