WE are moving from Montreal to Toronto
As per HRDC , I suppose to get EI if I have to move with family to different province:
HRDC Reason No. 17: Obligation to Accompany a Spouse or Dependent Child to Another Residence.

I TALK TO hrdc OFFICER TODAY AND THEY ARE NOT SURE IF THEY CAN GRANT ME EI BENEFITS. I can only get ei if there is no other alternative but to move.
Actually, we are moving because we have new born baby and my wife has some relatives in Toronto which will be big help for us. MY WIFE WILL BE ON MATERNITY LEAVE

BUT ACCRODING TO HRDC THIS IS PERSONAL CHOICE WE ARE NOT MOVING BECAUSE OF WORK RLEATED ISSUE.

IF I PROVE THEM THAT I WILL GOING TO TORONTO TO FIND JOB AND I HAVE GOOD CHANCES THEY WILL CONSIDER EI BENEFITS:
Reason No. 22: Reasonable Assurance of Another Employment in the Immediate Future

Any idea guys ? is there any steps that I need to take early so I can get EI , WE ARE MOVING WITHOUT JOB IN TORONTO SO EI WILL BE BIG HELP UNTILL I FIND JOB

Hrdc process is complicated they don’t give me YES or NO answer , they want me to apply for EI benefits once file is open they can take decision before that they don’t say yes or no.

Blue_Peafowl,
The HRDC officer was bang on.
They give EI only when your spouse moves far away to take up another job and you resign to be with her in her new town.
In my experience, I have seen a sopuse get EI when her husband moved from Etobicoke to Hamilton (around 60-75 kms).
I donot understand why you would leave a job for 50K in Montreal and move to Toronto where you have an uncertain future. Sine you say that your wife has 'Maternity leave", that would mean that she has a job waiting for her in Montreal. Why would you jeopardise that too? When she returns from Maternity leave and she does not have a job in her old office, she will be on EI once again and that is 10 or so month of EI money (apart from Maternity).
What I would suggest is that you move to Toronto with a job and then hope that you will be laid of in 4 or 5 month so that you will get EI. your wife would be able to get EI based on the fact that she moved to the spouse's work place. Try to talk to the HRDC officer along this line and see how it goes. What I do find that jobs in Toronto are going down (last will be IT jobs) and it is not expected to get better until the summer of 2010 and hence there is a very good chance that you will be laid off in a few months, should you get employment in Toronto.
Hope this helps.
Peace by TK

Hi TK

Thank you for your opinion.

I know it will be hard to find job in Toronto ...

But then again , at my company they have started triming down the fat, means they have started laying off people.... one buiding already close and other lay off on the way...

second thing my wife company already notify her that there will be no job for her when she comes back because they are going bankrupt

NOW , THE MAIN REASON TO MOVE... WE BOTH DOSENT SPEAK FRENCH AND NOW ITS GOING TO BE VERY DIFFICULT FOR US TO FIND JOB WITHOUT SPEAKING FRENCH...

Atleast in Toronto we dont have language barrier and will give us better chance of finding job then Montreal,QC

since my wife going to have maternity , we have some money coming in as well as
i will atlest find job as tele maketting, support or customer serivice job to begin with.

Plus i am considering putting some strong reason that i can have better chance of getting EI

for such as : we are moving based on french language barrier - that might consider as job related.

second i will try to find job before hand - will submit those documents

i will need to find some agency or company who can give me verbal or written confirmation that i will have job once i move to Toronto - that is strong reason.

THAT IS WHY I AM ASKING U PEOPLE IF YOU KNOW ANY OTHER WAYS OR TRICK THAT I CAN GET CERTAIN TO GET EI BENEFITS

If we dont take a move now and stay in Quebec it will be very difficult to find job after getting layoff from my company...since there is many qualified ppl with french skill to compete with.

ALSO, ONCE I GET EI BENIFITS MY PLAN IS TO DO SCHOOL IN TORONTO,, Montreal dosent have enough institute in IT where i can go for couple of month courses.

I spoke with the Helpline and though she could not give me any concrete answers , she encouraged me to apply when I told her that I was working permanent from Oct 2006 to June 2008 and then from July 2008 to Feb 2009 as Incorporated ...

I believe it depends upon the application and how it is decided upon ... She mentioned something about getting ROE from my ex employer ~ Whats an ROE please ?... I know it stands for Record of Employment but is it the same document that an Employer gives you as a proof of having worked with them or is it in a particular format ........

I did take a document from my ex employer stating that I have worked with them for the duration of xyz as abc at a salary of 123 ... But it does not mention whether I resigned or was terminated ...

Thanks .

Nope.
The ROE is in triplicate and has the Govt of canada logo on top of it as well as " Record of employment (ROE)" written on it.
It has column for your address as well as your employer's address.
It also has your employers CRA number as well as "protected when completeed' symbol. There is a serial number.
if your previous employer was deducting EI and CPP and taxes from your salary, he should be issuing you this. It can also be issued electronically (for which you have to read what it means).
Hope this clarifies.

Peace by Tk

Blue_Peafowl, if you company is already laying off people, why can you not ask them to give you lay off, apply for EI and then move to Toronto? Is there a restriction on moving within Canada when you are getting EI benefits?
