I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.
I agree most immigrants in Canada have negative feeling with the experience during initial phase of settlement. Very few are lucky enough to get good start in terms of employment and earnings.
I would state ,Here in Canada it is totally a different game as compared to backhome. It has different rules, different weightages of most aspects, different proportions.Anyone wants to try for success has to understand the rules and proportins of the game first of all and then workout strategy in a way suits him most. There is no single formulae for one to succeed.Everybody has different situation and different strengths. One has to make his strategy keeping in mind possibility of optimising his current or old skills and expertize. Not necessarily always stick to your past and wait for the circumstances to change. If circumstances are not changing or doesn't seem to change you should try to change yourself if you really want success.

Are you there?
I have read all the posts and find the musings a little different from my 3 weeks in Canada. Firstly I found fellow desis very very helpful, more than in India. Got a job offer though ,in an out of the way place, however in my line of work. Systems were fantastic and dealing with the goverment so easy. Got my SIN, PR cards. Got my 'G' drivers license. Was able to identify oppurtunities in business and came back very happy that the decision to immigrate is the right one. However, I personally feel Canada is a land of oppurtunity for enterprise and one must be ready to look beyond jobs for sources of income.

Niks. You have already taken the initiative to come to Canada and are half way there.
Consider these options.
1- Are you ready to start life once again?
2- Will you initially be willing to take any job to survive?
3- Does living in a basement bother you?
4- Do you have the confidence to go and face interviews?
5- Are you a sociable person who likes to make friends easily?
6- How energetic are you to do two jobs if you have to?
7- Do the cold bother you?
8- Last of all do you have the patience to wait till you get what you want?
If you have answered Yes to most of the above questions then you will be OK coming to Canada.
You have to realize moving to a new country like Canada means starting all over again. In the beginning you have to take up any job just to get used to the working atmosphere here. It is useless to wait for a job to come to you. You have to go out and look for it. Taking up even a small time job will also help you adapt to your new home. You never know, someone at your workplace could give you tips on job openings elsewhere.
You need to talk to people constantly, making new friends irrespective of their ethnic origin. It would be a better idea to come along with your wife as there is going to be some moral support when days get tough and you will have someone to share your thoughts. You never know your wife may get a job before you. You can forget about male ego here. Women sometimes land with better paying jobs. A basement is not bad. In fact it is a comfortable home by itself. Just that you may have someone staying above you and perhaps it may not always be on ground level but rather half way underground. If you want extra income to afford a few luxuries there are always second job available in stores, fast food joints and many other places. This all depend if you have the energy and initiative to work hard.
I came here four years ago, single, and managed to purchase a condo with some down payment that I had saved the first two years. I have never been so happy with my little achievement. It is not much but I know it is just the beginning.
Not that I do not miss India. I do very much. After a while you just get used to living away from home.
You may read some people have had very bad experiences in Canada. These are just a number, just like the ones how have been very successful. Most of us fall in the middle. It is these numbers that learn to survive against all odds and do well for themselves.
We all are makers of our own destiny.
I know some folks who came to Canada and then went back to India. A few years later they returned back to Canada and learnt to survive. Perhaps if some of them can relate their experiences what they lacked in India that made them come back to Canada will help a lot of prospective immigrants to make up their mind.
Dear all
thanks again for your feedback. could you also tell me that what would be the best time to come to canada? my visa is valid till april 05.
It would be best to come Before or After Winter, since the elements really are in full form then.
But Then I know people who arrived in peak Winter and it enabled them to get used to it sooner...or else you would have to wait till next winter to see the fun.....
In an overall context, come when you feel it is the right time.
