My 2 cents..
One of the many reasons of immigrants in problems here is that Canada does not need immigrant "managers" . That is the problem! A large portion of desi immigrants that move from India, especially those in the 30's have been "managers", or in similar positions, back home. When I say "managers", examples would be like people who are actually successful engineers, who have the knowledge but not the "skill". Something like the difference between an electrician and an electrical engineer, or a millwright and a mechanical engineer. These are people who have brains that are capable of "applying" knowledge and "managing" equipment, men whatever. These are not people who have any reasonable or useful experience working with their own hands. These are not people who have worn overalls and soiled and greased their hands.
These people then come to Canada on the presumption that here too they will be able to get jobs of the type they were doing back home as "managers" and that's where perhaps the calculations go awry. Canada is a land of whites and has sufficient white managers. What this country actually lacks is people with skills. The one reason perhaps why Indians have done so well comparatively in the IT sector is because essentially IT is also mostly a "skill" in the fundamental sense.
IMHO if you are coming to Canada, rather than spend too much effort and time looking for jobs in your own field etc., it would pay to get busy right away at acquiring a skill in your chosen field in the shortest possible time. You will earn just as much, maybe even more, than what you would have made even IF you would have got a job in your own field. That is after the big IF! That I think would be a better strategy and also one that will provide a much higher chance of success than to keep trying for years and wait to get lucky to get a job in your own field.
I might as well add that what I have suggested above is only MY opion and is certainly NOT applicable to all have come here or who plan to do so.

I share wisernows's experience. I have met many immigrants who are working in technical roles but very few managers. Just for example if we take the crossection of people on this board as representative how many people are working as managers vs how many people are working in a technical profession. I have worked in the US for 7 yrs and now I have worked in Canada for 2 (both places as a technical professional). IMHO The big difference I see in these 2 countries is:

----In both countries, as a first gen immigrant, it is very difficut to work in a managerial capacity. You have to work twice as hard to be recognised however since there are more opportunities in the US and people are more willing to try you out if you are good you rise faster and make much more than you can ever make as a manager in Canada.
----Basically in GENERAL Canadians are not risk takers. They think 20 times before hiring an immigrant, and they many times immigrants are hired at 10-20% less than the native Canadian.
----There are a lot more trade associations and certifications in Canada, which charge a lot more money. As a result there are many more barriers to entry to your field in Canada than in the US. I guess even if you want to haul garbage you have be a Certified Garbage Hauling Specialist (just kidding!!). Even though I was a PE in the US, and had a US degree I had a tough time finding a job in Canada. I shudder to think how People who land from India manage out here.

I know that a lot of people in this forum whill point out that they know a lot of immigrants who have made it as managers and they know Canadians who are risk takers etc. My reply is that Exception always exist. Dont get me wrong it would make me veryhappy to know that my experience here is among the exceptions to the rule but you just cant fight the facts.

I personally feel that the employers in the US are willing to take bigger risks in hiring...and thus immigrants find it easier to find jobs in their field in the US compared to Canada. Canadian employers on the other hand are more conservative.
Am I correct in coming to this conclussion? I had put this question up some months ago but did not recieve any answer. Maybe this is due to the size of the canadian market (population roughly equal to that of California?)

Jake is right. Int he end the Canadian economy is quite small. Only 30 m population means Just that much and not so many Jobs.

"Hoarding" on Immigrants may not solve the problem anytime soon.

I will see you guys later. Need to go and do the dirty work. :D

Friends,

Confused over the job situation in Canada, may i ask senior desis to kindly assess my situation & advise..............

At present i am working in Muscat (Middle East) as Management Consultant / Trainer for an oil company & my leave cycle is 80/30 i.e. 80 days work & 30 days paid leave with return ticket to India. My family stays in India. Net Earnings is equivqlent CND 3000 (tax free). Have my own house/car with luxurious lifestyle back home.

Expecting visa & landing papers by early october & planning to come to Canada by end october with my spouse & 2 kids. Brampton is where we we plan to reside for we have a friend who is very helpful in arranging an apartment even before we arrive. House in India will go on corporate rent with 3 yrs agreement.

Intend to stay for 2 months with extended leave to complete all post landing formalities necessary to get into system. Settle the family & also do a job hunt. If i am lucky to find a suitable job i stay back failing which ll return to my job abroad & try again during my next leave & also keep trying from abroad since i would be having a permanent address in Canada by now.

Please advise if my decision is right / wrong or needs modification.

Best Regards

Uday

Mr Pramod Chopra:

You have started this thread by putting in the dumbest article I have ever read in the Voice. That guy is a loser and i have no compucntion for such a dude. However, you have not shared with us your thoughts on this matter or would you rather sit on the fence and watch the mazaa.

Come onto the maidan, boss!
