Orginally posted by mercury6Hey merc, I have lived in this part of the world for over 20 years now and I guess my hobby is bird watchin if you know what I mean. But since I moved up here to Toronto from NY I guess I miss my friends and dont really have anyone to go bird watching with,And all of my family lives in NY too. so I thought maybe to get involved with the desi community here , But it looks like no one here likes bird watching. Infact most desi people in Toronto are just bitter and thats sad. So I thought just what you said get one bird , hobby and stick to it, but havent found a nice desi bird or another hobby yet so if you know any let me know. :-) just kidding merc

ihpatel,
Its a difficult question and as usual final decision is his.
WhenI called my brother for Bachelors in U of Toronto, He came on Student Visa. At that time I was in a very good Job here in Canada and Paid for his tution fees and all other expenses for 2 years (= 25,000 CDN). After that He became a Landed Immigrant based on my sposoring my mother (he was a dependent). From 3rd year onwards He started taking OSAP loan. He is now in final year. that was a lucky break because If his landed applicationw as delayed, I dont think I could have paid any further tution fees. For international student the fees is much higher.
For first two years he was really not able to work legally here andI didnt want him to work in any illegal hidden kind of way. So your friends should have enough money for his education + housing + food etc....
IF he is lucky he can find Job within the university campus (which is legally allowed as per student Visa conditions).
So as you see the biggest consideration is financial and then What univeristy / course to choose.

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.
Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting a couple from Mumbai who have been here for the last 5 and a half years. During this time the lady rose from being a customer service representative to the company's comptroller. Her husband also rose from being a labourer in his company to a position of construction engineer. Both were gradustes when they landed in Canada but had to upgrade themselves vagara vagara- the usual story. Their success story was printed in the Voice during the same time as Ghulam Rasool's failure story was printed. However, contributors to this site decided to publish the story of a flunkie instead of that of successful persons. In the five and odd years they have been here they have bought two homes for their parents in Mumbai. It seems that a few weeks later a success story of a lady named Sharda Batra was also printed in the Voice but did not find its way to this site. A tenacious lady who fought all odds to educate her child so that she was finally admitted to Yale university!
It seems this couple regularly contribute to the Voice- what follows is a letter written about dual citizenship but touches on their success as well.
Why doesn't canadiandesi print their story or anybody else's success story instead of most of the time posting negative material? You guys should hear their story. Two lower middle class family people who came here with borrowed money and made it. A story of gumption and grit- all you losers desrve what you have. The lady Vibha is tops!
God Bless Amchi Canada!
In regards to Mr Lachman's letter on dual citizenship, it would seem that the gentleman has led a nomadic life and lived for long periods of time in many countries. In such a case, perhaps it would make sense to hang on to one's Indian citizenship.
However, in the case of people who have migrated from India to Canada (or the US or UK or Australia or Germany but let us use Canada as an example as we are here) and have made this new country their home, we feel that is only right and fair that we take up the citizenship of our new homeland, that has given so much to us.
India never gave us anything much but education. Our parents lived in rented houses till we decided to come to Canada, make our fortune here, and buy them homes (note the shift from house to home - our parents didn't even have a home to call their own, till we came to Canada!} in India. All we have now is due to Canada.
It is so much better to live here away from all the eve teasing, the constant fear of communal riots, the menace of the bai-log (thugs and badmashes) and the filth that is there in Mumbai. One cannot even walk the streets at night in Mumbai. At least here we can enjoy a fresh evening walk without fear. The buses and trains in India are overcrowded and stink to high heaven compared to here.
We do not feel that we sold out on our country by becoming Canadian citizens. We on the contrary feel that there is no reason to remain loyal to a country that cannot help the middle-class help themselves to even buy a home and that lets it poor rot in debt. It is a country good only for the well off who live in airconditioned homes and roam around in airconditioned cars insulated from the dirty reality of mainstream India.
If the majority of Indo-Canadians want dual citizenship solely for the purpose of not going through the hassle of obtaining a visa, perhaps the Indian government should beat the US (and not always copy it) that grants 10 year visas, and go one step further by granting life long visas to Indo-Canadians. That would be a one-time deal, going through the hassle of a life-long visa instead of a new passport that the Indians gave up anyway in the first place.
As it stands now we will never take up dual nationality. Nonetheless, I sincerely hope the best for India and that God and its politicians will someday bless the country. In the meantime may God keep on blessing this beloved country that not only we, but many other Indians, now call their home.
Yes, once again, God bless amchi( soon even this word will be assimilated into the Oxford dictionary) Canada.
Vibha and Amol Gandhe.
I really wish I could get a copy of their success story in the Voice. I would paste it here and see how many responses I got- maybe as many as rshastry's or perhaps less before it disappeared into oblivion from the front page.
All you guys want to do is share sick sordid stories most of the time! Shame on you guys. If Vibha and Sharda- 2 ladies can make it -all you men out there who ain't made it just ain't got no excuse unless you are hijras!
