Hi,

Wondering if anybody has experienced the processing time for surrender certificate from ottawa. Getting mixed messages from BLS. Over the phone I was told 4-6 weeks, when applying in person I was told 3-4 weeks.

I want to apply for OCI to travel in Dec but not sure if there will be enough time.

Thanks for sharing.

Just OCI would probably take you around 2 to 2.5 months. Don't think you'll have enough time for both.

Last summer I had applied for transfer of OCI to a new passport in Toronto, they messed it up so badly, the entire process took 5 months. I had to take a visitor visa, 'cause I didn't want to take chances of being denied entry, since the OCI didn't get transferred.

You are allowed to enter India with OCI sticker on your old passport - just that you have to carry your old passport. It is clearly written on Indian Consulate website, and I have been travelling on it for about 6 years now (I have got two more passports after the one on which my original OCI sticker is).

However, a word of caution - one of my friends was once detained in Amsterdam (very silly of them) for not having the visa sticker on the current passport. They just did not agree for letting her travel with sticker on "expired passport". Indian consulate in Toronto are aware about this incident (I had personally talked to the officer quoting the incident and he already knew the lady's and her husband's name, even though they had never contacted the Toronto office. It was Indian mission in Amsterdam who informed Toronto office about this since this lady had to go there to get a visa to travel to India on insistence of the Dutch authorities).

As per rules -

Up to the completion of 20 years of age and once after completion of 50 years of age, it is MANDATORY that OCI Registration Certificate & U-Visa are re-issued each time a new passport is issued. Otherwise ENTRY into India may NOT be allowed.

This was for my daughter. Although they say may NOT , I had heard horror stories, so I didn't want to take a chance

Take PIO card. Similar to OCI and valid for 15 years.
I got it in one week in 2010 and you apply directly to the Indian consulate.
This is much better than the Visa.

You cannot apply PIO at CGI. You have to go to BLS Period.
