Good discussion ! I was surprised to see 3 pages when I came to work on a Saturday morning.

In 1999, I was in Saudi and since there was no internet at taht time, I was looking into my computer's source codes. Till that time, I was a very firm beliver in God (more because, my religion says Heaven and Hell after death, and I did not want to burn for ever in Hell). I found a statement in the source code :

" If God created Man, then how was God created"? (just as Fido mentioned). This set me thinking. I was never a fanatic and always am open to both sides of the discussion.

My personal experience is that I always forget about God when I am happy but when I have a problem, I start believing in God and pray that my problem gets solved. There is also a faint perception in my brain that the problem came into existance because I refused to believe in God.

But whatever may be the struggle in my brain, I have always been of the thought there everyone has to have a minimum standard of life and what is this minimum standard in life ? That is :
1. Food
2. Shelter
3. Access to medical care so that their death is peaceful.

Therefore whenever I see beggers on the road or people who are suffering (due to lack of money), I always try to help them in the very little way that I can. It can be a donation (one time) of Rs. 10, or Rs Rs50 or Rs 100 or even Rs 500 as the case may be and as what my purse holds. I am a very firm beliver that all lives are equal. There is no superior life or an inferior life. Everone has the same organs, same blood running inside.

My goal in life (which I still have not been able to acheive due to social pressures and personal greed) is to distribute my weath equally among that poor that I only need money for the minimum standard of life that I have mentioned above.

I am damn sure that if I do the things that I have stated above, i need not fear death or the life after death (if any). I can either leave the earth peacefully or need the creator with confidence.

If God created man, then who created God.
If God created man and some people donot like their life on earth and hate their life on Earth then when God was formed / made / existed, did he also wish that he was not formed but the had to carry out his duties anyways as he was formed ?

As a devil's advocate, just as human's were formed by chance and evolved, there is also a chance that these circumstances formed a great one known as God with super human power and he had the wisdon / power / understanding to create the human race.

I think that this also raised by Plato or Aristotle.

Perhaps one of the best thought process I have read in quite some time and it echoes my thinking as well ..

We do not know if there's heaven or hell , or rebirth or the day of reckoning ... These are all assumptions and beliefs without a solid basis ... But what we know for sure is that if we help some one (even animals) , we can derive satisfaction out of that in addition to the other person being benefit. I think this is also known as brotherhood of man.

But that was a digression or an off shoot of the original discussion .. Whether God is really there or is that Man created God to associate it with the unfathomable / or the unsee able .

For eg when a mom wants her child to sleep (though humorous but ) she tells her child ' Beta so jaa nahin to Gabbar aa jaayega ' ( sleep or the dacoit will come )... On a same manner man has used a similar analogy towards God and to expect other men to believe in it .... for what can seen or proven , can best be felt .....

Just try to cycle how man must have been in stone age ... fighting natural vagaries , surviving , hunting , creating fire , using stone as tools ...learning to communicate ... Do you think @ that time he had the time or the intellect to understand God ...

God came in much later as a phenomenon when some one went into a cave and came out to use God as a means of explaining the unexplainable ... like thunderstorms , death life , snake bite and stuff like that which with the lack of science was the unknown and hence very easily explained by coining 'God' .....

Renaissance or the period when man developed science and question religion has been a turning point in humanity ... Where men understood that earthquakes ,thunderstorms , tsunamis are not acts of God but have a geographical origin .... Nobody attributes petrol or gasoline to be God's gift ... just because science has reached a certain level to understand the origin.... I can bet in stone age , gasoline would also have been considered a God creation.

Karma ~ is it an explanation by God or by man ?

What is Karma ? It depends on the cycle of rebirths .. which in itself is something which majority of humans and religions do not believe in ... ?

If Karma is an explanation of why some one dies of cancer ... then why do we go to doctors & hospitals ... let his Karma cure him or her or let him suffer because of that .

And yet there are people who rather than believe in Karma ( which is again an assumption @ best) develop and help humanity by creating roads , aeroplanes , work as doctors and engineers and uplift mankind ...

( What happened to Hitler's bad Karmas . He lost his life but so did millions other innocents who's only bad Karma (if any) was to be born as Jew or go against Hitler ...... There goes your theory of Karma in smoke )

The theory of Karma is more for encouraging noble behavior rather than confirm the existence of destiny. As more and more people start performing noble/helpful acts, eventually you will be surrounded by people who help you in your time of need.

At the end of the day the choice it between good deeds and bad deeds and it is your personal/societal/national/religious compass that differentiates between the 2.

I don't know where do atheists derive their morals from...

I also don't know if building roads, bridges, aeroplanes are good for humanity - since along the way you destroy something that belongs to someone else.. :(. Does humanity encompass only the human race or humanity also includes the compassion for non-humans?

Happy Monday :D

Hiren ,

The same science which builds roads and aeroplanes also builds pacemakers for dogs and animals.. I recently learned that a lot of dogs in Ontario have pacemakers installed .

After women and children , pets are rescued here before men during flood and all as I have heard .

If there s a Karmic life cycles , I wish I can be a dog in Canada ... in next life ... I guess that is as good as it gets to being closest to mankind :D
