It's allright for all you guys to talk.
I am still a UAE national ( will apply for canadian citizenship soon)and for me Dubai= hell( as per the scriptures) and Canada=heaven( as per the scriptures).
In July I wanted to go to Dubai to see my parents. My parents told me not to come here as my uncles who are powerful figures in Dubai will not let me leave. I had to go to London and meet them there.
I am a UAE national and still cannot visit my home country for fear of being kidnapped.
Canada's life is definitely much better than Dubai. Money wise I did have it tough for the first 2 years but after redoing my Master's here. I am just fine as a matter of fact, I can't even practice a profession in UAE.
But I am just a lone sole voice. There are not too many women of Dubai origin pursuing a career here. I only know of two others and both will agree with me. There may be more.
Besides ME does not equal only Dubai. It includes, Iraq, Iran, Bahrain, Qatar and more.I know many educated families from Iran who will take Canada over Iran anytime.
Dubai desie

Just reading the news about this wall that collapsed at the Dubai International Airport and couldn't help but think about this thread.

Note one of the lines around the middle of the article - says one of the workers started to talk about his injured colleagues and was told to 'be quiet' by his supervisor.

It was interesting going through all the postings.
My parents in law were in kuwait for almost 30 years before shifting to canada. Even though they have been in canada for quite some time now, they still miss kuwait a lot. According to them, if kuwait had given them permanent resident status( which is not possible) they would have never left it. They enjoyed excellent professional, social and personal life there, much better than what they have been able to in canada.
I guess it all boils down to one's attitude and how open one is to embrace change.

That is the crux of the matter - people tend to forget that it is not only in Canada, but in any country you have to embrace change. And if one is able to do it, liking or disliking a country (or even a province/state or city) becomes purely a matter of personal choice. It has nothing to do with the country but what kind of life you would like to lead.

Many who like Canada love it for the freedom, the opportunity (so called) they get, the so called equality (think deep.....is there equality in ANY country??) etc. etc. etc. compare the things of what they personally do not like about another country - even they might be facing similar things in a suttle manner here in Canada

(like crenshaw put it:

originally posted by crenshaw:

Once a year, I would have to come out from a meeting, all formally dressed in my suit and tie, to line up with laborers from “my desh” to have a blood sample taken for my work permit formalities. These tests are conducted at public health centres, its common for people to have to line up outside in the hot desert temperatures and be herded around like animals. Once over there, there is no distinction between professional and peon, manager and laborer – “Yalla Ro Hindi”. Does not happen to me here in Canada

here he forgets two things:

1. non-descrimination is the basic reason why immigrants seem to like Canada - so if you like it for yourself, why do you discriminate if you have to stand with the labour class?

2. don't you have to stand with labour/truck drivers/welders/sweepers and yes, senior executives too in the same queue to get your OHIP or driving licence and get yourself clicked by a camera in a similar fashion they show in movies being done in prisons? Why this is acceptable if the blood sample queue is not acceptable?)

Forget about comparing it to ME - I have more than 2 scores of folks back home in India who would NOT want to come to Canada to live even if offered $100k as settling expenses - since they have their priorities clearly defined, which favour living in India.

So, in my opinion, it is not which country is good or bad, but what matters is what are your personal preferences and which country provides most of it.

Though currently in the Middle East I know somewhere inside that Canada has what I wish and aspire in life for . But I would never criticize either ME or India . --- they have both their parts 2 play in what I am 2day and more importantly what I wil be 2morrw in Canada .

And honestly I love when I stand with my country men in a queue whether they are truck drivers / workers and feel proud for them as well!!

Manasvi.
