In my case, I chose to be in Canada and no regrets.
Me and my husband were successful in finding a job in the first 2 months of arrival in Canada. Probably it was the timing and luck. As everybody says we did not find the top level jobs, we accepted what we got and in less than 2 years we were earning more than the average family income and we got the jobs that we really wanted to have. We always had a positive outlook; started low and went high in no time, though many of our friends here told us that it is hard to find a job that could pay >50K and they are all reserved for the whites. It was discouraging to hear but sometimes you may have to ignore and try hard and I am sure you can come out in flying colors.
PS: I still miss India but not as a place but my parents and the near relatives.
In and out of Canada
Hi all,
I have been in and out of Canada since last 2 years. In a way I have lived in about 4 different cities from east to west and now I am in Vancouver.
I have spent abt 2 months here and the weather and city is great. However I felt bad as I couldnot find any job in my field. I UNDERSTAND - - SACRIFICES -- ADJUSTMENTS - CANADIAN EXPEREINCES ETC. PROBLEMS ETC -
So I tried for other jobs like call centers, customer support and even odd jobs (Janitorial, Cleaning, Warehouse labor, Nanny - God help us) but people never replied or are filled up.
This make me wonder whether my Indian origin is coming in way and employers getting hesistant or any other reason. But thats what everyone is saying, its easy to blame to race bias for all my problems here. So I may be wrong here for sure.
With 10 years of High value international export and trading experience it becomes a embarrassing situation as I am with family and kids. Worst part is I was earning more than IT guys earn here in Canada and I left the job to come here. But but but,,again,,I dont blame anyone as I knew very well that in Canada I maynot get a proper job and earnings might not be that rosy good.
What made us come there was ONLY a nice weather, clean and healthy environment, safe hygenic food and growth of our kids in terms of health and education. And I must say it is very much there. The food quality, the pollution, weather, cleanliness, orderly traffic, freindly mannered people and overall caring government is what I have got here which I NEVER found in Delhi or anywhere in India for that matter.
Though I have enough money to support myself and family without any source of income here, but this is not why we came here to spend our savings into Canada. I have spent lots and lots of money here and earned nothing.
This scenerio makes me wonder if this was a wrong decision in financial terms. But I dont want to give up so soon as I feel I havent spent much time here yet.
The bad thing about here is high rents, too much licensing in everything, general bad perception about hiring Indians(God knows what's the history for this) and very few opportunities in traditional proffessions. I can only hope that recession doesnot take its impact here or else it will be worse. For me its easy to just pack bags and go back and start earning in India more than here, but India has become soft target for terrorists, and its no longer safe to bring-up kids.
It a dilemma of what to do and where to go. I wish Govt of Canada had some program where we could get temporary jobs to boost our confidence at least.

If you have experience in shipping lines (import-export), you can try in shipping companies. Canada exports most of the goods to US (which is almost considered domestic sales), so not much international sales jobs. You may want to start your own trading business.
Regarding survival jobs like customer service, it should not be difficult, but you need to show/make sure that you have moved here permanently.
Hope you are enjoying the snow for last few days (I also live in Vancouver)

Hi Friend,
I have true sympathy for you but i do not agree with you 100%.
I personally like india more than canada but truly speaking, canada has given me much more in terms of money and prospects. Its been 3 years and i have good paying job. I did labour work for few months but lateron i got job of my own line. No regrets.
India is good country but only if:
1. Remove all politicians and laid down qualifications to become a politician. How can illeterage persons become politicians. There should be strong merit to get elect just like IAS or other high profiles.
2. No reservation for any quotas. Remove concept of last name. Select persons on the basis of merit and not caste.
3. Indian people unite and fight for terror. Its been found that we indians never unite and that is the reason we fail to get good jobs in canada or any other country. Basically we behave like selfish people most of the time.
Indians are true intelligent but they are equally coward and selfish which makes them fail all the time.
No personal but in general my statements are true 100%.

I know that this has been debated umpteen times and I do not wish to start a discussion ... just wished to share a thought ...
Whatever we do , wherever we go , we are Indians at heart and that's our identity. Living in Canada , US , Switzerland we kind of miss that identity (some of us ) as we are on alien grounds ....
Its easier for the next generation to associate themselves with Canada , but for the 1st generation immigrant , we are torn b/w our roots , culture , identity on one side and life , prospects & existence on the other .......

Hi atsz
As it has been said several times in number of threads that Canada is good only for few professions by tamilkuravan (TK) such as IT. Finance etc..
Some people are prepared to do anything for money while some want to earn in decent way by working in their own profession.
Know one doctor who came along with family to Toronto and did factory jobs for sometime and later moved to Vancouver and currently both husband and wife are doing 12 hours six days a week security job making $7000 a month and one daughter is also working in a store and earning around $2000. The family is vey happy as their family income is around $10000 per month and not interested in returning to India.
It all depend on individual's satisfaction. It is not worth struggling and wasting time and money just for a nice weather, clean and healthy environment, safe hygenic food and growth of our kids in terms of health and education when one can afford a decent living in home country. See what India has given you good education, good job and enough money that you were in and out of Canada several times and still can afford to survive without work in Canada.
No job is secure here in Canada even after working for several years. Seen recently even many IT professionals being laid off due to recession even by big IT global companies. Even the economists do not know how to come out this time from recession.
Below is the link of one immigrant family story appeared in Toronto Star
http://www.thestar.com/article/546298
Wherever one stay, one should remain positive. It is only and only one's skill set and luck which can get good job in own field in Canada and nothing else and that too may not be secured for rest one's working career.
Hope this helps.
Jai ho!
This is interesting: I would like to add that it is easier to find the negatives than to see the positives. The only time we all see positive is when it comes to ourself and then it is hard to see the negatives. The whole world is a globe and every place is good when you are happy. Happiness is also a self imposed phenomena and does not come to everyone in the same way. For people is war zones, happiness maybe related to enough food and staying alive but for some us in North America, it maybe a palace size house with gas guzzling SUV. We also tend to enjoy at the cost of others miseries and try to taunt them at their decision where we are not even affected.
I will say if someone decisions does not affect you and other human beings, wish them good luck where ever they are. There is no offense in someone being living elsewhere happier than here in Canada or vise versa. I can make myself look like a CEO of a big company who already made that most of us will make in the rest of year but hey I am a normal person with a normal job. I immigrated 4 years ago am happy got a job the next day I landed and may be the reason happier. This may be true for some us but not all. Now this does not mean those who did not get one, they were not good. People sometime are not at the right place at the right time and that is all. I will say let the people express with full support from all of us in whatever way they would like to express and let everyone tell their stories. There is a task for everyone out there and it is where their food is. We need people to spread out on the globe. There is no place on earth superior or inferior. Nothing personal and my apologies if my statements above hurts your feelings.
I wish everyone a happy and prosperous 2009.
