But what I was trying to point out that Canada does have some significant advantages as well, and if 2 people(spouse) have good jobs in a city like Toronto, I think life is actually better here in Canada. What I don't agree with is the notion that everything is much better in the US while Canada stinks.

-- In US, only one spouse can easily support the family, and that's why life is better!! Whereas in Canada both HAVE to work to have a descent life. (and I will not call this better!)

I believe the public infrastructure, eg. public transit, I think in most Canadian cities(I have stayed in Ottawa, Toronto and Halifax) is excellent. The same cannot be said for most of the US barring NYC.
In 95% places in the US( I stayed in NY, NJ, CT, MA, VA, OR, TX ) you cannot live without a car, whereas in most Canadian cities you can get by pretty well. I think things like that are a huge advantage, especially for people starting out.

--- I think that US is a far better place for professionals. I will not say that Canada stinks, but again, US is much better in (almost) every way in my opinion. Public transit system is better on the US and Cdn east coast. Try living in Edmonton, you will start missing your car. Or try prairie provinces too, where the bus service is very limited (This is my first hand experience).

Again life in the US is very job-centric, whereas in Canada you at least don't feel you are out on the streets immediately if you happen to lose your job. ( I am talking about EI, health benefits etc.) But then again we know that Canada is a far more socialistic compared to the US.

US social security is similar to the EI, so Canada and US are at par in this aspect. SS is not available to people on H1, whereas in Canada almost everybody holds the immigrant visa, but the jobs they do are blue collared jobs and hence they get social assistance. Then they say that the life is much better in Canada because they are not on the streets! In the US, it is easier to get another job (for a professional person) if you lose your current job, whereas in Canada it is very hard for a professional person to get a job. And if you lose it, then it is even harder. Because EI lasts only for 9 months and jobs are harder to find. Also, EI is about $1500 per month which is not enough for a family man with kids.

Talk about healthcare? I used to have my own insurance in the US when I was contracting, and still I used to get (and save) much more than what I used to back in Canada.

Hi,

I think the original topic was TN visa for 3 years, and now it has changed to which is better US or Canada? Both have advantages and disadvantages and most importantly where you get a good job in your expertise, that country is best. It is no doubt that Canada has smaller market for professionals than USA and US is cheaper. But many of our CD's have got good jobs in reputed companies in Canada too. The only good thing is that if you get a job in Canada you don’t have to worry about Visa issues, which is a lot of hassle in US. And if we compare Toronto to a majority of US cities, Toronto stands so much ahead in terms of living standards (I am not comparing US/Canada, I am comparing Greater Toronto Area and majority of US cities). So what I personally feel is that if you get a good job in your profession in Canada, then it should be ok. May be some of people might not agree with it though.

And regarding TN visa any news when it will be available for 3 years?

Thanks

This is good news for those looking to relocate south and work towards a GC without having the hassle of renewing at the border every year.
No more being dependent on H1s!

Is "TN to GC for people born in India" possible, without having to go through H1B?

There was a post in CD where one member on TN has applied to GC, but he said to be chose a good lawyer. The safest way is TN -> H1-> GC. As TN is a temporary visa for 1 year and it has temporary purpose. So try following safe rote. Thats my point of view

TN->GC is possible irrespective of your country of birth. Timing is very improtant in TN->GC and it is not very tough if you (and your lawyer) plan it carefully. These days, getting H1 is tough, therefore one should look into TN->GC route if one has desire to get the GC. I have done TN->GC successfully.

cdn_dude, you are right. What I said is that if someone has a decent job in Canada and is living in a place like the GTA, it does not always make sense to move to the US unless the salaries are much higher. I am not talking about blue collared workers working labor jobs.

eg. If someone is making 80K in Toronto I don't think it makes much sense to move to the US unless you are making at least more than 90K.

That is my honest opinion. And having lived in the US(all over) I can still say that the public infrastructure, (transportaion, social benefits etc.) are better .. at least in Ontario and Eastern Canada. I have never lived in Western Canada so I don't know. You can certainly live without a car her more easily as compared to the US.

But yes, if someone's primarily goal is to save money, then the US is a better destination.
