there u go u admit. i guess this is the trait which most desi's have and like u said they will learn just like u did. 8 months is pretty quick though.
by the way i am not "intolerant" as u said. ihave lived in a cosmopolitan envt and i know how discussion religious issues is not healthy. i doesn't bother me whichever religion u r. u haven't said anything wrong whilst referencing but personally my opinion is stay away.

Cheryl, in fact I faced problems of a different kind in Calgary.. not due to be impolite or discorteous but for a set of different reasons. I am saving those reasons for a different article. I was meek and submissive and not self confident in this new society.. In short, I was overwhelmed.
This all changed when I was pushed to the wall and had no recourse. It was a desperate situation for me. I changed and I changed for the better ! Thats why, I want all desi students who come here for a Masters/Ph.d degree should know all the nuances of day-to-day life in a Canadian educational institution. I cant speak for the workplace environment..But I presume its more or less the same...

nerd, seems like ur a student. ur situation may be different and yes by discussing this we may divert from the original topic. u might want to save it for another discussion. Using the magic words does not mean u have to be a bakri about to be taken to the slaughter house. one has to tough and not allow the goras to give u crap. U should know where u should draw the line. Here again it all depends on an individual the way u portray people will either take u for a ride or not.

Exactly...it was good thing I had my education in english... after that, they could not give me any more crap, other than the usual " hidden discriminatory attitude".
But as I mentioned before. When I went back to India, it was such a sobering experience to say those few words like "Thank you", "Hello"..
I can give you an example.. I was shopping at "Music World" in Calcutta. A lady, who was an empliyee there, came to me. I just greeted her and asked for a few selections. Think of it... She began speaking in english with me ! while folks all around me were speaking in Bangla ! It was kinda akward, afterall I did not want any preferential treatment.
I can only think of an analogous situation from an english movie that I saw (in fact th efirst ever DVD that I purchased in 2000, even before I had a DVD player 
)
It was from "To Sir with Love".. When Sidney Poitier asks the girls in the class to address the boys as "Mr"..and puts the caveat, "If they deserve this courtesy then they (the boys) should demonstrate that they are worthy of this courtesy".. That had a great sobering effect on me as well. I wonder if many Desi's are aware of this film !
