And honestly,

If you really are planning to do something that will help immigrants, kudos to you. We're on the same side.

I have suggested one of the ways of handling this problem............you seem to be more stastical guy....why dont you suggest some solution other than having a meeting........

I dont know why every one is gussing that I am in some Labour job......kyu bhai...khali majdoor majdoor bhai bhai.......

And to those of you who complain that some desi doctors are driving cabs here, I went to a desi doctor here yesterday (who's been practising for a long time).

He was horrible!!! Got irritated at every question I asked, basically his idea was that I register my name, he gets his 25 bucks and I leave without a fuss. Although that does not say anything about desi doctors in general, I wonder who the hell certified this guy. He should've been driving a cab!

It seems you went to a walk-in-clinic when there were plenty of patients.

Hey jago_desi ... LOL ... you have done a wonderful job ... and this is the spirit ... take it easy and remember we are all on the same side ... we all recognize that THERE IS A PROBLEM AND THAT SOMETHING NEEDS TO
BE DONE and well this is the begining ... in the mean time don't give up on IDEAS man .... IDEAS are what make DREAMS come true ... SOLUTIONS PEOPLE SOLUTIONS .... no acrimony please ...

You know one thing is very true ... almost everybody who has become successful thinks Canada is great and vice versa ... where's your objectivity People ....

Yes I do think Canada is Great ... but I thought the same when I went thru my struggles ... which I am still going thru ... yes there are flaws ... yes there are things that need to be addressed BUT Yes there are OPPORTUNITIES ... and I believe that is the key to many of us immigrants' aspirations !!!

This entire conspiracy theory is a little too shallow!

1. First of all if the Canadian government had wanted to meet a temporary labor shortage with a view to reducing minimum wage levels, they WOULD have brought in workers on temporary work permits.

Incidentally, with the oil prices being high it appears increasingly likely that there will be an increased investment in the 'oil sands' project in Alberta (the oil sands could potentially hold as much as 180 billion barrels of oil). I've read opinion pieces that talk in terms of the prospects of bringing in large numbers of 'oil workers' from the Indian sub-continent, purely on work permits to meet this labor demand. Similar papers / opinion pieces are available in the public domain on the internet, I will hunt for links and post them on this thread. That is an example of what the government does to meet a temporary labor shortage.

Why would the government not bring in immigrants to meet a temporary labor shortage?

A simple answer. An unemployed immigrant would lead to several costs - unemployment allowances, possibly welfare payments, the costs of retraining the immigrant to work in another industry if he cannot find work in his own. With a temporary work permit holder, its so much easier, you just tell the guy to get lost (which is what the countries in the Middle East do).

2. Immigration records (available on www.cic.gc.ca under the research and statistics tab) show that upto 50% of new immigrants are dependents and will not enter the work force immediately. Obviously, that means that 50% of the new immigrants do not affect the minimum wage rate.

3. Out of the total dependents, about 60% (representing 30% of total immigrants) are basically students. One of the other posts on this thread suggested that the government would need to ensure the replacement of the current workforce, since significant numbers will be retiring in the coming decades. Having an immigration that consists of 30% students seems to be consistent with this need.

Another post on this thread suggested that hardly any immigrant support programs were in place prior to 1997. Asian immigrants started dominating immigrant numbers during the 80's and the 90's. European immigrants never needed extensive support programs, they came here and built their own lives. We have to sit back and ask ourselves why we need the government to do everything for us, and why we cannot help ourselves for a change.

To say that the immigration policy has failed would be unfair. The government has made available a lot of facilities - things that we would never have had in India. Tons of information are available on the internet to aid immigrants in settlement. The government however, cannot hold your hand and give you a job - else they would have to employ millions of people, create fatted government employees who know they will never be sacked (something that India has done), and spend money like crazy, building up a huge deficit that would have to be paid off by our children and our children's children (again something that India has done).

We have to appreciate that government cannot hold our hands and find jobs for us. The west works on laissez faire, so while looking for work, new immigrants have to look to the private sector. And the only way you will get a job in the private sector - apart from demonstrating your professional skills - is by demonstrating that you are capable of integrating with team that you a part of.

Which brings us to the point of communication skills.......but I digress here.

Jago ... I read your first post again. And i see your point. Just that i dont agree with the conspiracy part. But I agree with your hidden message of what immigration is doing to the labour market trends.

I also do not agree with the time frame you give of mid 80s...the trend of foriegn labour force coming from overseas is centuries old , it is not a new trend ....people form all walks of life have been migrating and getting readjusted here in Canadian life in whatever openings that came their way at that time . The only difference is that desis have started coming in large numbers only in the last 2-3 decades.

You must be knowing how Transcanadian rail line was build? In 1871 when british columbia joined the confederation thousands of chinese people came in to do the construction from Montreal to BC....the trend has been going on and skilled workforce has been coming into Canada. Since then Canada is built by immigrants .Till mid 1900s most immigrants came from europe and South east Asia and blacks came from US.
when British rule ended the world over in the later part of the 20th century the demography of immigration shifted to Indian sub continent in a big way . The first post independence generation stayed put in india because of the socialist culture and curtian wall of that time . But the 2nd or 3rd generation after independence saw the doors to the world open up in the last last 2 decades, the number of indians / desis immigrating jumped drastically not just in Canada but world over. My friend, it is the natural immigration trend and not a conspiracy as you state.

But I agree with you on the impact of mass immigration on the labour market trends its benefits to the small scale and unregulated industry here in Canada. .

Will write another post on that later.

Canada has kept its doors open for skilled people , we just excersice our choice and the privilage to come here and call it our land after 3 years.
