OTTAWA—Canada will open its doors to up to 255,000 immigrants next year, the federal government will announce today.
But what the government won't announce is its plan to dramatically boost immigration levels by an additional 100,000 newcomers a year. Under that strategy, first floated last month, Canada would accept 320,000 immigrants a year, an increase meant to counteract a declining birthrate and aging population.
The department had been hoping to use today's target announcement to unveil its ambitious multi-year plan to ramp up immigration levels. But the proposal still hasn't received cabinet approval, signalling that there is some resistance to the scheme within government.
\"It's still under discussion for the minister and his cabinet colleagues,\" said Stephen Heckbert, spokesperson for Immigration Minister Joe Volpe.
The topic of increased immigration levels is certain to be on the agenda when Volpe meets his provincial counterparts on Friday in Ottawa.
Canada accepted 235,824 permanent residents last year. Its target range for 2006 will be to accept between 225,000 and 255,000 new residents, according to the annual report on immigration to be tabled today in the Commons.
But as federal decision-makers debate the plan to allow more immigrants, there's growing pressure on the government to first tackle the challenges now facing the system. That, too, will be on the agenda at the meeting.
\"He'll be having discussions about the issues they want to bring forward to fix and improve the system,\" Heckbert said.
Those ideas include encouraging immigrants to settle in communities outside big cities like Toronto and Vancouver, which have been traditional magnets for newcomers. As well, the politicians are expected to discuss ways of better matching immigrants with available jobs.
Ontario is expected to press its case for an immigration agreement with the federal government, one that would mean millions of dollars in new federal funding for Queen's Park to help newcomers settle here.

I just want to bring to your notice that everytime I post something, this guy DTC jumps from nowhere and tries to mock and make fun of me. He is highly arrogant and his only hobby is to insult others which he thinks is his birthright. He expects people to always digest his sick and sarcastic words without ever reacting back. He behaves as if he owns Canada and even our thoughts and ideas and destiny. Thus when we do not agree with what he says he has all the right to call us \\\"idiots\\\" and give marching orders. He even has no humanly feeling whatsoever towards fellow immigrants and laughs callously at someone's struggling life story. Look at his other posts for the proof.
Today he crossed all limits.
He started today even when I posted something addressed to Rajan Desai. He barged in like the self appointed dictator of Canada and gave the marching orders saying\\\" Get the hell out of Canada.\\\"
You have seen that I have always requested people to refrain from making any personal remarks. But patience and gentlemanliness have limits. You cannot talk like a gentleman with a bad mouthed guy who does not understand sober words. Hence I decided to give him a taste of his own medicine today.
Now it is for you all to decide. Are you going to let such pathetic guys like DTC continue spewing their venom without any check whatsoever? Are you going to let him go around scotfree insulting the other CD members at his own convenience? Is hurling personal insults going to be the rule of the game here? If this continues it will be harmful for the reputation of this website, which is indeed a beautiful one. There will be no more meaningful discussions and debates, only exchange of insults and filthy words.
Blue Lobster, you are the final authority to decide here. So I request you to intervene in this matter which seems to be aggravating and post your decision here. I will wait till that time before posting anything further.

Listen birdbrain, I have been around this forum a lot longer than you. Unless you have read EVERY SINGLE post that I have made, don't go around pretending that you know anything about me. I have helped out my fellow CD members on numerous occasions, unlike you. It's people like you who harm the reputation on this website by engaging in Canada Bashing and rhetoric.
If you hate Canada so much, why don't you go back to India? why stay here and struggle! and be miserable! and whine! ??? Or are you even THERE IN CANADA?????

Arey BL ka naam kyoon pukarela hai, boss. Woh to Kumbhkaran ka avatar assume kiyela hai.
