Has anyone had a recent experience of surrendering the indian passport? how long does it take to get the surrender certificate? Does the counselate take debit/credit cards or will it accept only a Demand Draft?

If your Indian passport expired before 2005 then you can simply to go Toronto located office and surrender your passport, but if it was expired after 05 and you have used it to travel to India then there is a penality you would need to pay I think its about $265 dollars.
From November 1st, 2010 Brampton located office at Gillingham would also start providing this service. I was at there office today about the same and this is what they have told me.
I want to apply for OCI, but I must surrender my Indian Passport 1st. I will be going to the Toronto office on Friday to surrender my Indian Passport, I could let you know more after that..take care, Ani

Thank you Ani. I just surrendered my passport today too. Anyone wishing to surrender has to go to the CGI office until Nov 31 whereafter vfs is taking over the process (and will charge their fees on top of the current fees). As you mentioned there are penalties attached if your passport has expired. The CGI site has all the details.
Anyone surrendering please note that the application form to surrender is under the "forms" section of the CGI site while the checklist (which doesnt mention the form) is under the details of the surrender passport section.
Also, everyone needs to submit a self addressed post paid envelope. Best to make the Demand draft after carefully calculating how much the cost comes upto (depending on penalty/fee etc). CGI toronto accepts money order or demand draft.
