Since Chandresh is to go on vacation and may not get enough time to pen down proceedings of the meeting, I was asked to do this pleasant job.
Fourteen of us turned up for the meeting and it started right on dot at 2 pm and continued till 6:30 pm on July 31, 2004.
I would like to place on record our deep sense of appreciation for the efforts taken by Chandresh and his son to make this meeting a successful one. The venue was very comfortable and the arrangements excellent. The discussions were detailed and lively. In general everybody was highly satisfied with the outcome.
The following are some of the points which were discussed.
(1) After a lot of discussion about recognition of CA from India, it was felt that an effort should be made to open a local Chapter of the Indian Institute of Chartered Accountants in Toronto. Some members were entrusted with the job of exploring the possibility and studying the feasibility of such an attempt. The interests of members can be better served through a recognized body was the general opinion.
(2) The issue of starting an 'association' of South Asian professionals came up for discussion. Advantages of forming such an association were debated. No firm action was planned. However, the members present felt that the idea has merit and needs to be discussed on a broader platform.
(3) Many members were of the opinion that for those with CA it might be a fruitful exercise to explore the job opportunities in the financial services sector. Two members from the financial services sector presented their views on this and explained the additional educational requirements and various licensing procedures.
(4) It was strongly felt that those qualified but not working in their fields should join hands and offer their services to the market place under one umbrella. Some useful associations were made in the meeting.
(5) Another significant suggestion that came up for deliberations was the formation of an expert panel to deal with the finance-related questions posted on canadiandesi.ca. The idea was to provide timely and accurate answers to queries.
(6) It was emphasized that members should post articles on financial matters and create a knowledge base that can be repeatedly tapped into by desis. This knowledge base would avoid answering the same questions over and over again.
(7) The meeting ended on a positive note and with an unspoken promise to work hard to achieve success.
The success of the above effort critically depends on the active participation of other desis who could not attend the meeting. We urge them to share their views on this platform so that concrete steps can be initiated.

Man's Best Friend
Hi Friends,
Good work and great decisions. I am really sorry i could not attend due to some unavoidable pre-occupations. I am seriously interested in any of the effort that help finance/accounts professionals in any way.
Suggestion of opening a chapter of ICAI is a welcome steps.I do remember in late 2001 or early 2002 the President, Vice-president and Secreatry of ICAI had paid a visit to Toronto. Current secretary of ICAI Mr. Haldia is a classmate and a good friend of one of my CA friend who has been here in Waterloo. We can ask him for help.
We shpuld sketch out a plan and go ahead accordingly. I will pleased to contribute to this noble cause.

I just forgot to mention that I know current president of ICAI Mr. Sunil Goel. I personally met him several times as executive member and vice -preseident of Alwar chapter of CIRC OF ICAI. Mr. Goel belongs to Jaipur. My partners have been in practice at Jaipur. I can talk them and for sure we can get their help.
In my opinion if we are serious, we can succeed in opening ICAI chapter. Before I go ahead and initiate a talk with these guys let us do our home work. I will talk to Chandresh on this issue. However, today I will speak with my partner and ask him to confirm the procedure and how he help us on this issue.

Hi Friends in Accounting,
As I wrote you earlier about Mr. Pramod Jain in my previous posts and contacted him to help in this cause. His reply is pasetd below.
DP,
Yes, I know Sunil Goyal very well. Last month he was here in Montreal to attend IFAC meeting. Thereafter he came to Toronto to see me and had stayed with me.
We can open the chapter but the most important thing is that what are the aims and objectives.
Not to discourage but to my assessment Indian CA's here do not even pay their membership fee to keep it current. As they have no interest of returning to India they are simply not bothered about what is happening there.
I can get done whatever you want for the purpose but also explore that we will be able to keep it alive in future.
You see he can get this work done and also see how sweet relations he has with Mr Goyal, current ICAI President. we have to answer his concerns. These are not only his concerns but the council of ICAI would also come up with same concerns. I invite you all to share your opinions. If you wish you can write me a PM or call at 416-305-0080. In would suggest to call for one more meeting in which we will invite Mr. Jian to have his views. Mr. Jain is a senior CA and holding all three Indian accounting designations. Besides, he is a CPA and perhaps finihed his CGA. I invite Chandresh to take lead.
