U know before reaching this website i was all set to apply for Pr of canada and came across this website by chance.
This is really a one stop window for all like me thinking to migrate to canada and nourshing a dream of having a great life in canada. For that we r willing to leave r reasonably good jobs in India ,make up our mind that for a year or two we will have to struggle hard but after that life will be smooth and great.

But after reading the experiences of other memebers on what kind of low level labor jobs, hardship they have had to suffer despite their great indian qualifications(CA,ICWA etc) ,now i m really thinking againn whether to go ahead and apply for canadian PR ???
I remember reading in some posts that some cardiac surgeons too r in dire condition.Even ppl who have acquired canadian qulaifications like CGA and have been in canada for 3-4 years r facing difficulty in canada.
If even after 3-4 years of hardship life does'nt get smooth then where does one stand.Maybe cum back to India ???

Hey what is this??

M I planning to migrate for a better life in canada or to be in even worse off position in canada?

R there some good experiences also that somebody can tell me so taht i dont get discouraged to shelf the plan off completely.

IS IT REALLY WORTH ALL THE PAIN???

Please throw some light on this......

Jay

its all a matter of personal choices... yes there are a LOT of people who screwed themselves silly by coming here, but my personal view is, 90% of people who failed is because they didnt do their homework before they hopped onto a plane...

its very unfortunate that a LOT of desi's have incorrect expectations about migration which in my opinion is one of the leading factors as to why people have difficulties migrating... desi's come from a mindset where they dont really have any struggle (or any significant struggle) back home, things always come easy to a person when he or she has an established base already to build on such as family, friends etc... all migrants migrate because they aspire to be better (which is a good thing)... they assume they will be afforded the same facilities as they had back home which is never the case... even if you have close family or friends here you just cannot expect the same level of support you did back home from them...

the first and foremost reason why people run into problems is, they move to the wrong place... location location location... the choice of where you want to move to should be based on a number of factors, but almost ALL desi's i have seen make that choice based on what they hear from relatives, friends and other desi's and their experiences, which may not be applicable in their situation... very very simple example is this one guy i know from gujrat who is a geologist with 7 years experience and had initially migrated to toronto because his sister and brother in law were there... he did not take time out to do his research to see how adaptable he will be based on his skills if he moved to toronto... lest to say he worked in a factory for a year on minimum wage... thankfully though he is now employed by an oil company in fort mcmurray in alberta...

the next thing is the skills the desi's bring to where they are going... again as an example, java programmers moving to toronto where there are hundred other java programmers already there without employment... what else can you expect? bottom line is, these days, not just in canada but like any other country with a mature economy, employers have a wide variety of candidates to pick and choose from... and they obviously want to get the best value for their dollar... a lot of desi's dont think about what they can do to make their employment prospects better in a new country.. they automatically assume that they are good enough as they are and are unwilling to be flexible... and then things dont work out the way they want it to, untimately end up blaming lack of canadian experience (which i agree is a important factor - but it can still be overcome, it all depends on how you package and present yourself) or they blame the whites for being racist against them or they feel sorry they didnt go to US instead because their friends in US are better off etc etc...

also, what i have started noticing in people who move to canada is, they try to get experiences of others specially on the internet, and most of the things they read there are bad... its usually a person who has failed in canada who will rant and rave the loudest about how he was screwed by this country and how he should never have come here... there are very very very few posts on the internet about the success stories (and there are a LOT of success stories) and unfortunately reading all these negative experiences, we set ourselves up for failure... we come here expecting to fail (but obviously hoping to succeed) and in that state of mind unfortunately are not able to recognize any oppurtunities they present themselves, or become too timid to make new oppurtunities for ourselves...

bottom line is, once you move to a new place, you have to be flexible and adaptable to the new place, and that includes the society and culture... we come from a mindset where it is the husbands responsibility to provide for the house and the wife takes care of the house... in canada, you need a two income household in most cases.. unfortunately, a lot of the wives who come here are too timid to become involved in the income generation process, just because they have never had to do it back home... this is just a simple example of the need to be flexible...

and biggest thing, you just CANNOT model another person's experience and expect you will go through the same thing... each individual case is different... two people with the exact same situation in the exact same place will have two different stories to tell...

as far as success stories go, there are a LOT of them... for one, i personally am one... we are financially secure, we own our house (its amazing how much faster you can pay off your mortgage if you just double your payments and make the occasional prepayment)... i run my own ERP services company with 4 big name oil and gas clients, and moving to canada was the best thing that has happened to me and my family.... when we first came to canada my wife was four months pregnant and i had US$455 in cash and US$1000 in travellers checks (borrowed money to show as landing funds which i returned a week after we got here) and i knew NOONE when i moved, no family or friends even in the same province... closest relative i had was a cousin in another province...

i must admit, i have been very lucky... by the grace of god, everything i have touched since coming here has become gold... but i also know i am not the only one... there are a LOT of people who have had similar success that i have had... some are real estate agents, some own their own businesses, some are into IT... from various backgrounds...

when did we move to canada? 5 and a half years ago...

ps: sorry for rambling on and on ::-)

A true gem of a post, BigHead.

Insightful, articulate and inspiring all at the same time!

Let me highlight a couple of points here I find most crucial

Quote:

and unfortunately reading all these negative experiences, we set ourselves up for failure... we come here expecting to fail (but obviously hoping to succeed) and in that state of mind unfortunately are not able to recognize any oppurtunities they present themselves, or become too timid to make new oppurtunities for ourselves...

I completely agree that this is the wrong mindset to come here with. After you have thoroughly evaluated your reasons for migrating and have done your homework about the ground realities here, you should forget about failure. Sure, the possiblity is always hovering at the back of your mind, but when you land here, let it stay in the background. Expect to succeed!

and biggest thing, you just CANNOT model another person's experience and expect you will go through the same thing... each individual case is different... two people with the exact same situation in the exact same place will have two different stories to tell...

Very true indeed. Although other's experiences do provide a basis for objective thought, it hardly forms the entire premise for a decision whether to migrate or not. THAT requires a lot of introspection. I'm sure you'll get responses and info to your question here and undoubtedly they'll help you move a few steps further towards your decision. However, ultimately you are the best person to answer your question, don't you think?

An excellent post "bighead'. The post is worth it's weight in gold.

I agree that there are very few success stories that are posted. Maybe it's out of humility people don't post it.

I had 2 job offers even before setting foot in Canada. I picked the best job and 2 days after landing I started working - this was in Nov 03. Exactly one year befoe i.e, Nov 02 I was laid off in London (UK) and for next 5 months I was out of a job. All I am saying is that you've to negotiate the ups and downs of life.

Regards
Daks
