FAQ is a very good idea and we've actually thought of this before. The issue is however who has the time to bell the cat.

But yes, I'm going to start looking for volunteers on this who can help shortly..

This concept is called " Nipping off the bud". Stop it before it (the genuine topic) goes out of hand.

Read my response to Jake above, it should address your concern.

Its not possible to put a fort around context in each thread, however I agree, moderators should step in early to prevent straying. Watching each thread for this is not practical however and hence I want separate sections. The idea being "objective" vs. "subjective" threads.

I've already put couple FAQs on Driving, Children education section.
Trying to put some more...
Could you pls. consider the Driving FAQ thread a sticky one...

Regards,
JRF.

Somehow force the people to search the charcha section so that they can find the answer they are looking for right away instead of waiting for people to answer their specific question. May be garvo can design a better way of searching the forum some advanced options.

I think the FAQs should address some of this. It gets more and more difficult as the number of posts go up, but yeah, it'd be nice if people could search and continue on those threads as opposed to start new ones.

Very difficult to implement for new members who are not very computer savvy though...

Agreed, some people like the arguments and debates and I don't want to kill them. But they do tend to take away from some very well-intentioned posts. That I do want to stop.

There should almost be a whole different section for the Canada good Canada bad section. And I'd like those posts not to show up in the "latest posts" or "latest replies" section.

Whoever's interested can go into this section and go debate to their hearts fill. And when I have time, I'll be one of those people. At the same time, people looking for objective settlement advice aren't exactly looking for this. And it would be nice to have another "view" of the charcha section for these guys. I'd have to look at this code wise and GG knows more about this, but it would be great if we could let people customize charcha to filter out sections they're not interested in.

Sounds like a reasonable compromise.

Maybe you can prevent the problem about threads turning to a tangent by that 'report to moderator' button. This may help the mods to then look into it and see if it warrants moderation. There are some posts that reek of disinformation, racism(gora this that etc). Maybe a mod warning will prevent other members from coming onboard against such statements leading to the inevitable 'quagmire' :)
