BL, I had this discussion with Jake also sometime back. When we term someone a fundamentalist, we are actually wrong (in a wierd way). The "terrorists" (and their apologists) are literally following their religion "in-toto". So if someone doesnt follow the BOOK in toto, they are branded as heretics...case in point "Ahmadiya's and Sufi's"... Even amongst Christian's we have the wacko's and the progressive liberals...Mind you, it took a few centuries for Christianity to evolve.
It took a few ppl like Gallileo Gallilee, Nicolas Copernicus etc., to challenge the Catholic church which is why Christianity is what it is today. Its a different story that the Catholic church has not changed its doctrine but who cares for them anyways...They are losing their followers and hence the need for conversion in other parts of the world.
Now if ISLAM has to get rid of these wacko's (and their apologists), they need ppl like Gallileo, Copernicus within their ranks. The families that you know are but in a minority and who knows, they may be politically correct ! But behind your back you never know what happens..(I too dont know)...
Did you read that other incident where a shootout took place outside a Jewish gathering in Seattle...The guy called himself a "Muslim-American"...you figure out the rest, and mind you..this guy was born and brought up in the USA....
What Tony Blair says is true, but whether it can be implemented, I dont know... I guess Samuel Huntington;s prophecy of "The Clash of Civilizations" has indeed begun....

The Catholic church(unlike earlier times in history) is not that active in conversions. Its the Protestant church, along with sects like 'born again christians', jehovahhs witness etc ., who are at the forefront of conversions in various parts of the world. As I mentioned before I do not see anything wrong in that but thought I'd mention the difference anyway.

Propaganda is like an ad and just like a company sets aside a budget for such often misleading information, so do governments.
The nazis made it into an art.
They actually had a "State Ministry for Public enlightenment and propaganda".
and had a person like Goebels to take care of it.
Today of course we dont explicitly need such a tool and media will do the needful for ALL sides.
