I'll leave the number crunching to accountants like Crenshaw, Manasvi, Chandresh et al.

Hey BL that's not fair:nono: Have you ever seen me quoting numbers/stats?

I have always believed that statistical surveys and numbers can be really misleading at times. Give you an example:

A survey was conducted in a small town relating to family sizes and childbirth. The results showed that each man had 2.1 children while each woman had 1.7 children.

Do we derive that men have more children than women do? and if they do, I wonder how! (without the help of women? )

Chandresh

Quite right, Chandresh. I've never seen you throwing around numbers.

But I didn't mean that in any derogatory fashion. All I was stressing is that I'm too lazy to look at and study all these surveys and rankings and do an analysis. If numbers do need to be crunched it would be best left to you guys, the accountants, cause that's your forte, not mine.

Some thoughts:

7 out of 10 immigrants were satisfied with their decision to come to Canada

44% had found work within a relatively short period of time (6 months) of coming to Canada.
6 out of 10 immigrants were employed in a field that was different from that which they were employed in prior to coming to Canada. However, only 52% were actually looking for another job. Does this mean that the other 48% made a career change but were happy with it?

Among men 39,700 immigrants had occupations prior to coming to Canada but this increased to 43,800 after coming to Canada. Among women 22,300 had occupations prior to coming to Canada, after coming to Canada this increased to 28,300. Any thoughts on this?

Reading through the article on the UWO website was also interesting. We have a number of engineers who contribute regularly to this forum. Do immigrating engineers regularly apply for an assessment of their credentials from the Canadian Council of Engineers?

I think its best to lay the whole statistics for all to see instead of selectively presenting it. There maybe some good and bad news dpeneding on how you look the numbers.:

From the above site:

A Glance at the Numbers
----------------------------------------------------
The number of well educated and trained immigrants struggling to find work in their field in Canada are staggering.

"Highly educated and highly trained immigrants and refugees often find it impossible to work at the level for which their training has prepared them; the resulting underemployment is a potent risk for emotional disorder."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business found that:

* One in two businesses are worried about the shortage of qualified labour.

* It is expected there will be a shortage of up to 1 million workers within the next 20 years.

* Last year, 265,000 full-time jobs were vacant because of a lack of "suitable candidates."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

statistics Canada:

* According to the 2001 census, Canada's entire net labour growth will come from immigration by 2011.

* 6 in 10 immigrants that are employed do not work in the same occupational field as they did before coming to Canada.

* A Statistics Canada report found that immigrants who were working 6 months after coming to Canada were typically employed in sales, service, processing or manufacturing. For most, this is a major employment demotion.

* Before coming to Canada, the most common occupational categories for men were natural and applied sciences and management. For women the most common occupational groups were business, finance, administration, social science, education, government services.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

check the table for exact stats
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* 70% of immigrants who tried to enter the labour force identified at least one problem with the process.

* 76% of immigrants had at least one form of foreign credential.

* About 225,000 immigrants come to Canada each year.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ONTARIO

* 60% of all immigrants who come to Canada live in Ontario.

* Recently the province received over 100,000 immigrants from over 180 different countries.

Breakdown of all skilled immigrants in Ontario
Engineers

60%
Engineering Technicians/Technologists

15%
Accountants

10%
Healthcare Providers

9%
Teachers

* The unemployment rate of internationally educated professionals is over 3 times higher than other people in Ontario.

* 60% of foreign educated professionals took jobs that were not related to their training when they first come to Canada. They held the same job three years later.

* 47% of skilled immigrants in Ontario who are employed are working in jobs unrelated to their fields.

* Less than 1/4 of foreign educated professionals who were actually employed were working in the field they had been educated in.

------------------------------------------------------------------

ONDON

* A study on immigrant professionals in London, sponsored by the Coalition of Canadian Immigrants and WIL Counseling and Training for Employment, found:

* A 40% unemployment rate

* 20% of London residents are immigrants

* 76% of those employed are working in occupational fields other than their trained profession.

* The most commonwork performed by immigrants outside their field was factory work, then retail clerk followed by cleaners.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

List of Professions In Demand in London
1) Nurse/Practical Nurse
2) Teacher
3) Physician or Surgeon
4) Engineering Technician
5) Engineer
6) Medical Radiation Technologist
7) Medical Laboratory Technologist
8) Respiratory Therapist
9) Dental Surgeon
10) Dental Technologist

* Of the immigrants with professions identified as being in the top 10 professions in demand in London:

62 engineers were unemployed

38 teachers were unemployed

14 nurses were unemployed

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Between April 2002 and March 2003, the Cross Cultural Learner Centre had 269 new clients:

139 Professional Engineers
76 Medical Professionals
54 Teachers

These skilled immigrants could help fill positions needed in London - especially in the medical field - but are bogged down by the licensing process.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

there is more in there.

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.

Well, 7 out of 10 said they were satisfied........!

While 6 out of 10 were employed in a field different from that in which they worked in prior to coming to Canada, 48% were not looking for another job? Any suggestions as to the reasons for this?

When they talk of work, it is work in literal sense; be it field job or change in career.
From the above article it can also be assumed that 48% career change people have given up their hope to get back in their respective field. Among man or women coming in independent catagory were selected despite of being out of work in their respective countries. Only then professionals number can increase after reaching Canada!! any thoughts for this????
This may help you to learn frustation of engineers. Only Professional Engineers Ontario can provide you with the necessary certification. The process is as following:
1)Apply with your degree and Transcirpt
2)Appear for the technical examination or take exemption and appear for technical interview
3)Appear for the ethical examination
All the above steps are in self control and can be accomplished with course of time, approximately 8 - 10 months if exemption for technical exam is granted
Final step is to work under a professional engineer( PEng) for atleast 12 months in a period of 48 months.
Now your expert advice is required, how to get this 12 months experience without a job in an engineering company and engineering capacity.
Company would require PEng and for PEng job is required.

Here is a site that presents views on a forum. More international than just desis. note that even native people are telling immigrants to stay away from Canada.

http://www.canadaimmigrants.com/forum.asp

Maybe the natives are telling us to stay away as we are eating up their jobs who knows.
