Remember that there are a lot of new immigrants and prospective immigrants reading this site, don’t generalize and don’t put in unsubstantiated statistics (70%, 80%, ALL, etc).

Yep! And in the same spirit, also do not paint a picture more inviting that is real!
Suggestion : Why not conduct a poll on this board itself and get a live feedback from members of the board! Modify the questions to make them more general e.g when the post mentions "80% of professionals in Canada work at Tim Horton’s" I think it more of a general way of saying that 80% of people are working at wage levels equivalent to that earned at Tim Horton's.
Could the mods/admins set up a poll on some of these issues? I know polls have been conducted earlier too and quite surprisingly I cannot find where the polls are on this site now. Have they been taken off or more likely I do not know where to look for them?

Wiser

The results of the polls are available on the website. On the home page, below the current poll towards the top right hand corner, click on "View all polls".

Incidentally the poll on "how long it took people to find their first job (matching their qualifications) in Canada" has about 579 votes. About 40% said that they haven't, while on the other hand about 18% said that they found one within one month......

An additional poll asks respondents whether their migrating to Canada was worth it........40% said it was, another 16% said maybe, 20% said it wasn't........

For the benefit of prospective guys to take their own opinion .As with others this post may also be biased .

When I had applied for Canadian Immigration in 2000 I didnt expect anything else but hunky dory !! Canadian dream being in the West , next to the US in the hub of technology and an economy which invites professional people as the best place to live in .

Gradually (since I had time) I decided to find out whats happening . Illusions faded quickly when I learnt that Canada is not the technical hub and \"most educated\" Immigrants were pitiably forced to do odd jobs to make a living until a hopeful job picks them up.Since I was / am prospective I took the findings seriously and I must admit Canadian Desi has been an excellent resource of both positives and negatives . These negatives were unknown to prospectives earlier and they came having a different mind set .

No its not that bad . Now how much is \"that\" . Although some one has corrobohated my figures of 7/10 people doing odd jobs, even if the figure goes down to 6/10 or even 5/10 it is still abyssmal . For even in a poor country like India u wudnt find engineers and CAs and doctors doing menial jobs like cabbies , working in cafes ,watchmen and the like .

So there s a correction needed somewhere --the economy is not able to utilise the highly educated manpower which being in mid sea finds it hard to return but for the inherent human nature of hope --lets see what happens next ...........

Fact is that Canada invites talent and expereince and education from other countries and then unutilises that talent which disappoints . As a collateral it gives to you better living conditions , civilised life , better organised and systematised society , rules and regulations and good infrastructure .

Its you who decides --- whether u had prefer to be an up class professional in Blore /Delhi or an average worker in Canada . And more often than not 'grass is greeener on the other side' . Therefore my opinion come with and open mindset and be wary of the negatives also the positives are all to know of and they already attract . Why I retireate negatives is to inform others before they make their choice lest u feel undone.

BTW here s another guy who made his choice and I find it pertinent to quote him here as I feel that this is going to be one of the most popular thread to be read by prospective new comers .

A bitter fact I encountered in Canada . Its the average Desi who knows that he can never reach the top and thinks of leading an average life reaches Canada .

Manasvi, a cpl of questions only you can answer. Do you consider yourself an AVERAGE desi? If not, do you consider it worth the effort to prove that you are not?
The problem I notice is that people think they are above average(based on their track record) once they land here they have a tough time proving their previously held assumptions.
This is a humble observation and is not meant to be judgemental and provoke anybody. So please feel free to ignore the post if needed.

Jake ,

I apprecaite your comments in all your posts . I consider myself "average" amongst my Canadian Immigrant cousins .

A Cost Accountant (ICWA)
Oracle Certified Pro -- Database Administrator
Oracle Certified Pro -- Application Developer
Sun Certified Java Programmer .

I am working for the past 05 years in the Middle East in above related areas in Apps Development and Administration . I recently got an offer for INR 50 k in Bangalore which is still in deciding phase as I have to compromise on savings .

I have spent years to study and get this knowledge .If this goes unrecognised and I have to work as a cabbie then there s either something wrong with me or the system .

Regards,
Manasvi.

Crenshaw / Chandresh/BL,

I would re iterate some facts......People still forget that "SUITABILITY" Factor is the key to get a job in canada........

They dont care about Qualification / experience........otherwise the interviewer would not ask silly question of Invoicing to Chandresh......

Now..how to get that suitability factor is a BIG question..........

It varies based on the requirement of the "BEHOLDER"........... few examples include......Personality, Local knowledge, Canadian Accent, Outspoken nature, Overall Canadian outlook.........

These qualities do not come with "BIG" degrees from India.....

I am sure "CRENSHAW" has all the above mentioned qualities......hence he is successful in Canada..........

Truth is 75% of people coming to Canada from India do not work on these and rather highlight "Qualification" which reaches deaf ear......

Ever wonder why East Europeans who have not seen a University succeed in Canada??????

No crenshaw, they aren't the only jobs. But the fact remains that in Canada they are looking for non professional experience for an office job too, or vice versa. there are advertisements asking for accountants or persons with accounting qualifications - and the job requires knowledge of data entry in a particular software. You know that I had recently gone for an interview - that was for a 45 k job and you have asked me how did it go, which I have not replied toas yet. The interview went well, and I did underplay my experience and levels that I had worked at. But in the end, on asking what her first reaction was to the interview, she replied 'I know Chandresh you have all the knowledge needed for the job and you are a professional who has worked from bottom of ladder - but you know, you do not have the specific experience (of using Simply) (and preparing individual invoices).

Now does it mean that if I have made 2 invoices a week in the past, I cannot make 20 invoices a day?? Does it mean that if I have handled Accpac, MYOB, Quickbooks, AS400, SAP, I still cannot operate Simply accounting? Can't an average common sensed professional change to suit the new work he has been provided?

It is indeed unfortunate that some employers insist on some obscure experience. I know this might seem quite hollow to you since you’ve been at this for some time now, but one has to persist. Did you put the same argument to the interviewer, saying that if you oversaw the preparation of invoices in the past, you could very well prepare them as well.

Its really up to an applicant to convince a prospective employer that they are the right fit for the job!

While I totally appreciate that these circumstances are unfortunate, its also very unfair to see statements like the following:

“Canada has ONLY labour jobs”
“80% of professionals in Canada work at Tim Horton’s”
“70% of jobs are labour jobs”
“Below average desis who have nowhere to go in India, end up coming to Canada”

I draw attention to BL’s comments again. Remember that there are a lot of new immigrants and prospective immigrants reading this site, don’t generalize and don’t put in unsubstantiated statistics (70%, 80%, ALL, etc).

Absolutely Deep,

That was 1 point I was not recalling for some time .

And I thought all whites were British , Americans or French .

You find these obscure whites from god forsaken countries like Romania Checoslovakia whose handwriting resembles a 1st standard doing the work which you are refused despite your own superior qualifications and knowledge on the pretext of Canadian experience .Does Java /Oracle /Human anatomy behave differently in Canada ??
:p

You are absolutely right Deep - but time and again i have been told that it is because of my Personality, Local knowledge, Canadian Accent, Outspoken nature, Overall Canadian outlook that they feel that I am 6 figure income guy (a point also raised by the entrepreneur in another thread) and therefore not suitable for that clerical position. They feel (both due to personality as well as accounting and finance knowledge that I have) that i am the one who could control the Controller and therefore not fit for a senior accountant/book keeper role.

The problem arises when persons like me are not found to be fit for senior roles like controller or VP because though I have Personality, Local knowledge, Canadian Accent, Outspoken nature, Overall Canadian outlook, I do not have the Right Canadian Experience for that position.

So the problem is:

1. You are too senior for regular run of the mill jobs giving you between 30 to 50 k, but at the same time you do not have the right Canadian Experience for a 55k and above jobs.

2. And since you do not have the right Canadian Experience (i have Canadian experience -but that is in Krispy Kreme, or working temp as accounting clerk at 35-40k positions), they cannot hire you, and because they cannot hire you, you will not get the right Canadian Experience.

So what do you do?

Chandresh
