Guys, this thread is beginning to get into a zone where things can get unpleasant .

Religion is a heavy subject and we all need to post cautiously. Please avoid finger pointing and casting "your" opinions on any particular religion.

On the other hand, we all can enjoy some good insights if we deal with the larger concept of Religion on the whole. Which is the title of the thread.

Kudos to all participants , it is great to see some very good posts in this thread, some tend to get offtrack but by and large it has been a great discussion. I am sure we can keep it that way.

"MAKE LOVE BETWEEN YOU AND GOD"

What?!!! Buddy, I suspect you need to read your posts before clicking 'submit'.

Jesus is the Son of god, so I think Maxim may have a point....

What is the connection between the line I quoted and what you are talking about?

Again Crenshaw, you are reading too much into some ill formed English....all he meant was that Prophets Preached that we should all Love God.
you are taking things way too literally. Most rest of us understand That is what Maxim meant (whether you agree with rest of his post or not, which I dont).

My statement basically meant that God sent his only Son to prove to us how much he loves us and want us to be free of sins. In return we love him. This is obviously not as simple as I put it, but the crux is this. Jesus is symbolic here. God could have shown us that he loves us by other means.

There are Christians on the board who may add to this.

OF course I dont beleive any of the above, but i then I dont belive in any such thing from any religion.

Well,
"Fear" this is a deep insight. I would term it more as social regulation and conditioning. Anyone who has read Michele Foucault and social constructionism would know what Mercury is talking about.

Also, in relation to another post. We do not always know by instinct what is right and what is wrong. Issues of Gay rights, Women's rights, Racism - If we knew what is right naturally we wont have these issues. It is because we have ideologies (religious, social, national) that we can not be morally objective.

I think mercury's post was the most profound so far. Fear explained it all in one word.

I feel the need to be religious springs not just from "fear" but also from two other instincts, "reward" and "gratitude"

Everyone has these three instincts in varying degrees of strength. As long as one is able to calm ones mind , the purpose of religion is then served.( whichever religion it is )

Religion has always been used by a bunch of smart people, who are up in the food chain to deceive a vast majority of them creating a illusionary world of good and evil. It is a very effective tool to brainwash and keep people under control.

The smart ones in any country just believe in the following lines

Ours not to reason why Ours but to do and die.

What created religion? Need.

Man needs to feel that there is a God, hence a Reckoning for everything socked to us & everything we shell out to others in this life.

- the need to justify our deeds,

- the need to know things won't go unpunished,

- the need to control others and assert your right over them (aka oppression)

- the need to convince ourselves that we're all not just some byproduct of a universe with a life of its own, and our existence actually has some MEANING to it

- the need to justify life's biggest reality - Death.

Cheers.
