I pasted a letter from the TS in my last post. Here is today's reply to it.
One act no proof of inhumanity

`Anti-Semitism' meaningless term
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Letter, Oct. 18.
I find it astounding that Rick Patrick would point to the horrific act of one soldier (who is under investigation and will no doubt be punished) to illustrate that Israelis (read Jews) are inhumane.
This soldier's act (the shooting of a Palestinian girl) is contemptible and shameful to Israelis, unlike the comptemptible and shameful acts of Palestinian suicide bombers, who target innocent civilians — men, women and especially children, and who are celebrated as national heroes and martyrs.
They have summer camps named after them, they have songs written about them, their families receive financial compensation.
Just who is inhumane?

Glaring example of intolerance
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
`Anti-Semitism' meaningless term
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Letter, Oct. 18.
Rick Patrick's letter is a glaring example not only of religious intolerance, but also of the ignorance that sadly perpetuates anti-Semitism.
Patrick's admonition about anti-Semitism that "it's a meaningless term, applied to anyone who says anything critical of Jews in any context," is patently absurd. Patrick's suggestion that being critical of Israeli policy toward Palestinians inevitably leads to charges of anti-Semitism leaves one open-mouthed with disbelief. Israeli political policy is always open to legitimate discussion and vigorous debate.
Pointing the finger at Jews and proclaiming that our community defends itself by throwing around accusations of anti-Semitism is just plain unacceptable.

Guyz,
More people die in the name of religion than of anything else.
I don't think the intent of the orignal poster was to invoke specific religions, so it'd be nice if we can refrain from that.
I think one of the major purposes of creating religoin would be to get people to conform and obey. If you go tell someone "Do not kill another or do not steal" as an individual, it does not mean much. However if you present it in the context of a divine plan, it carries much more weight. Especially when it comes with the "hell in afterlife" warning.
In that context, I agree with Canin that religion was created by some very smart people to advance the cause of civilization and build socieites that conform to certain norms.
The down side is that it left a lot of room for abuse. And I don't think anybody needs any examples of that. But then again, that's just the nature of the universe, ever drenched in conflict. Everything that can be used can be abused.
