Crenshaw,

where do you hail from in India?

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.

I don’t disagree that there is a degree of embarassment for a person who wants to return. However, when life in Canada gets to be worse than the ‘embarrassment’, people would ‘cut their losses’ and leave.

Ha!! THAT'S the point!!! Cribs and complaints are expressions of dissatisfaction and not a measure of its "degree"!! Life in Canada does NOT normally become so bad as to overcome the pain of embarrassment.
For most, the anguish of hurt pride is too much to swallow. And as has also been mentioned by Manasvi, hope never dies!

We have 2 scenarios:
An above professional who was ‘doing well in his career’ in India, not able to make the transition to Canada:
As an above average professional, should be able to find a job back in India.

Good for argument's sake but not as easy as it you make it sound, my friend!!

Can say that he returned to India with the economy ‘booming’ etc, to counter any potential embarrassment from having not made the transition to Canada.

First:
Economy booming (NOT =) Job guarantee!!
Second:
Economy was booming even before he left! Therefore in terms of economy booming, the delta is zero, and so the excuse is not convincing. More important, it is the person's own pride that has indeed been hurt!

An average or below average professional who was ‘going nowhere in his career in India’, not able to make the transition to Canada:

With the Indian economy ‘booming’, he should still be able to find a job in India, after all its his home country, and the place he worked all his life.

Are you serious?? Does any employer gives weightage to candidates on account of "home country", and "the place he worked all his life"?? If you know someone who does, do send me his name! I will apply for the job!:D

If he can’t find a job, perhaps he has a major problem, and the Canadian system or employers should not be faulted for not wanting to hire him!

The point is that this man's "major problem" that is being discovered AFTER his immigration, could very well have been identified by the system BEFORE they let him come in!! Do you see now what the gripe is?? It is not that he is not getting a job! Rather it is that he feels that he has been taken for a ride. When a country offers a visa under skilled category, the message that the country sends to the immigrant is that there is a shortage of people with his skills, implying thereby that chances of his getting a job are fair to good!
It is only AFTER the immigrant lands, that he discovers that his assumption was wrong. It is AFTER he lands that he discovers that his skills are NOT wanted or appreciated. It is only AFTER landing he discovers that the employers are NOT willing to accept him with his qualifications and experience as they are. It is only AFTER landing he discovers that his employment and job prospects are dependent on several OTHER factors, that the system did not openly reveal earlier. It is AFTER landing he realizes that while he was not lied to in direct terms, vital information was withheld by the system! In fundamental terms, he realizes that he has been had!!
Therfore the complaints!! Got it??

1. You make it sound like only someone from an IIT / IIM is an 'above average professional'. All others are 'average' irrespective of the professions that they come from. The truth is far from that.

2. Any sample of immigrants that you take is likely to indicate a very poor view of Canada since you are predisposed to looking at Canada in a negative manner for your own reasons. Any sample of immigrants that I take will indicate that immigrants fare well in Canada, because that's what I have experienced and the people that live around me experience. The difference is that you have your views by living outside Canada while I have developed mine here!

3. You've talked about forming your opinion about Canada based on conversations with people at parties and based on the 'sad faces that you saw at Nathan Philips square' during your one week visit to Toronto. However, you haven't indicated if you talked to recruitment consultants or potential employers. Wonder what 'waves' you could feel on the street!

4. Your insinuation that there are 'no jobs' in Canada is terribly misplaced. There are lots of jobs for people, check out the jobs websites. The problem has been with immigrants transfering of skills to Canada. Here to, a lot of people do succeed.
'Let the readers decide' - lol :D you make it sound like the US presidential debate ;)

Hmmm sorry 2 b late guys .

1. Crenshaw Yes IIT / IIM / AIIMS guys r definitely the best in India & prove the same worldwide (any1 worth his salt must ve aspired 2 b 1 of the league at 1 time or the other) . I wonder how u can question that. Norm and not exception makes the rule . This goes in defense that those who r doing well in India more often than not dont consider Canada as an option . Ever wondered why so many less doctors on the board . Simple -doctors are thriving in India and have better incomes as compared to other professions due 2 burgeoning population.

2. Cant say abt ur sample but my sample is generated by being on this site for > 1 year plus talking 2 a lot of ppl who r in Canada plus my visit over there. Agreed theres a possibility of distortion but theres
no smoke without fire .

3. Grass roots is definitely the best indicator of whats going on . Consultants wud never admit the depressing job scenario --doesnt make sense !!

4. My contention being misplaced is ur interpretation and I have no reasons to trust it . For ur info jobs on web sites can be and are faked . Can u please tell (something which u evade)-- how many Indian engineers do labor jobs in the first year(an indicator if nt statistics - I wish 2 hear ur numbers , kindly let them fiorth -- 1/ 10 , 2/10 ) -- do u imagine the same guys working as labor in India which is in ur opinion 'too low ' .

5. As a finale I quote a CA plus CPA whom I met @ Toranto -- ' Jab main Dubai mein thaa to teen CA mere ko report karte the aur yahaan par jobs bhee nahin hai --- apna kaam hai isliye card par CA bhee nahin likkha hai ....meri wife kaam kartee hai .... bas yeh hai kee yahaan par apna dhandha hai -- CA articles ke liye bhee yahan par locals ko prefer kiya jaata hai '

BUT YES I DO AGREE THAT NOT EVERYTHING IS LOST --- MANY PEOPLE MUST BE RETURNING & I VE SEEN A COUPLE ON THIS BOARD ITSELF . Recall this guy from Dubai and the one from India (James ) as well.

Manasvi

PS : I appreciate the info countering my contention misplaced . I ll keep that for records and just hope that it is valid .

Jake ,

Do in Rome as the Romans do .

What shud 1 do when he observes that his requirement wud be soon finishing ?? He doesnt harp upon it but adapts 2 smthing else .

When one observes that CA s and Engineers are working as labor one feels that the economy isnt geared 2 utilize skills . Whats the next best thing if u ve got money --- use its leverage .

Do a business which is in demand and will be on the rise as the population increases which is eventual. I feel even a small restaurant owner on an average wud be doubling the figures earned by an Engineer . Plus u can claim all incoem tax benefits as well.

But yes its a far cry as of now . U r right -- I ve been an employee all along and may not have known biz vagaries from near . But willing 2 take a dip as I believe in it !!! Its the belief and faith plus logic which goads me ahead .

Manasvi .

Manasavi,
IMO you have better odds of making it as a pro...but only if you have the following...

If you choose the biz route...i hope you dont meet the many disgruntled ex biz men OR read about the approx 80% failure rate of the same, as you did with the pro

All the best!
