No, you can no longer legally use ON plate once you get a US DL and US license plate.
I don't see any advantage in keeping the plate. Insurance is cheaper in US so I would recommend you return the plate to ON and claim refund of the annual fee.

It is either better to have all ON documents or all US documents, not a mix and match. If you are going to be in the US on a TN or other non-immigrant status, keeping your ON documents will not hurt you other than fact you are missing out extremely low insurance rates in the US.
In order to obtain US plates, you have to first import the vehicle. You need to contact vehicle mfr for DOT and EPA compliance letter which you need to take to US customs to get import paperwork done. Once that is done, you'll need proof of Texas insurance before allowed to register in the US. Driver's license can be done at the same time when you plate the vehicle.

The idea is NOT to use the ON license plate but just keep it for use again ( may be buy a car in canada or whatever ) .
On the car US plate will be used and US DL ( but just to keep the CDN plate ) .
is it possible ?
anything I should keep in mind for keeping ON plate number ?
