Surrender certificate is totally opposite of a citizenship processing and hence such high amounts are un justified .
I believe they created a hue and cry in the US and succeeded in getting the fees down .... if its possible in the US , its very much possible here ....

" My Car insurance went up 500$ per year in-spite of 3 years of claims free and ticket free driving record
Car registration also is done once instead of year on year like here..
Government runs on taxes and fees, not on charity.. with millions holding black money and not paying taxes no wonder the government has to resort to such hikes from people who have no choice but to pony up..
Every immigrant paid 1000$ in processing fees per person for CAD PR, Australia charges 5000 per person for PR.. and now ppl have a hard time coming up with 500$ per person for getting indian PR..
Loot is everywhere.. it is just a choice what u want to look at and what u want to ignore."
I tend to disagree here....before we apply for immigration, we know the fees, and we CHOOSE to apply and pay. It is not that we reach airport in canada and officer says, pay $ 10000 or you are going back....before making income here, we knwo we have to pay x % of tax, we choose to earn and pay.....you see these are not surprises.....and frankly, on another note, i think to some extent we do get return of tax we pay here...anyways...we pay india visa fees too but this to me did not seem right....
USA charges 450$
http://cominganarchy.com/2010/07/02/last-chance-to-renounce-us-citizenship-for-free/
Canada charges 100$
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/renounce-how.asp
This charge is not uncommon.

Hello CD's,
My case is as follows:
1) I got my Canadian citizenship way back in 2007 and the OCI in the same year. My Indian passport has the 'CANCELLED' stamp on it. By all accounts, i should not have anything to do with the surrender certificate.
But, when i contacted the VFS staff, they want me to pay 260$ as a part of penalty and get the surrender certificate. what a load of horse manure!
My reaction will be to simply ignore them. Since, i have my OCI card i would technically never need to approach the embassy again. correct?
I would appreciate advice from all the concerned forum members.
kind regards
Sri.

From my experience, their India based call centre people do not have complete knowledge about all the rules. You should actually visit a VFS centre to confirm.

Thank you, kulb ji for your timely and informative reply. I will pay a visit to the VFS office in toronto.
You could be right. The indian call centre replies are very generic and of little use.
My question to all the concerned officers at VFS or Indian consulate is:
when the passport is expired and on top of it when the 'CANCELLED' is stamped very boldy on it, who in their right mind would want to to show it to the immigration officer at the port of entry?
Now that bribery is getting a hard look all over the country, Babudom has found a legal way to generate money.
i would like to sign up for the petition if there is any link.
kind regards
Sri.
