I do not think that above short answers present a TRUE picture and are right comparables. As a Dubai resident some 5 years ago (now a Canadian citizen) I have seen many friends/clients (mostly young families; 30-45 year age group) from UAE immigrating to Canada, settling down within one year, working in good jobs and are very satisfied with their decision.

There are some people who take longer to settle down. Some folks are still working there and their families are settled here. But the way the cost of living is rising in Dubai, even they are planning to move here soon.

My opinion on the above points can seen below, respectively:

1. How can you just land and find a Managerial job in a jiffy? One has to work his/her way up. If one comes with an open mind, gets into a profession of his/her choice; the potentials for growth are unlimited and many times more satisfying than how it used to be in the Middle East.

2. It is a no brainer, with the booming Oil based economy, any person in the Oil field sector should find a good job in Alberta-Calgary, Edmonton and Fort McMurray.

3. Earning 10,000 AED pm and renting a decent studio apartment for 5000 AED pm (plus pay out extra for utilities) makes no sense. When you do your math, not many people are saving top dollars in Dubai, than they used to a few years ago.

4. 5. 6. 7 and 8. One's job depends upon on many factors - age, education, experience, skills, attitude, local knowledge, some luck factor etc.

I can talk about many real time stories of people who have secured excellent jobs. There was this person who would not come and settle here, because of fear of not finding a great job in the banking sector. He was working as a Sr. Manager with Dubai's leading bank in the risk manangement field. It took him 2 years to make up his mind. But when he did, he started with an entry level job in his own field with Scotia Bank. Today (within 1 year) he is a Manager -Risk Management and doing very well. There are many stories like this, I see Dubaiwalas getting into Canadian job markets everyday.

9. What luxuries are you talking about? How many average Dubaiwalas can afford maids these days? The salaries have not shot up while expenses have sky rocketed. Many families who used to think twice before migrating to Canada are applying to come here. Canada has a balanced life compared to Dubai. Good schools, top class extra curricular ativities that are basics for Canadians come for an expensive price in Dubai.

What if you loose your job in Dubai? Dubaiwalas know the answer well enough! The job stress is worst in the Middle East.

Dubai is NO comparision in my opinion. It is the individual's attitude and mind set that makes all the difference. One thing is clear, in order to succeeed, one has to burn the bridges, because one cannot succeed in both the places at the same time. Remember the old saying,"Dhobi ka kutta, na ghar ka na ghat ka"

Let me know if anyone needs my help. Dubaiwalas are dear to me and I wish to see them succeed in Canada.

Shukran,

Hi All,

Though my immigration papers have still not been processed, I have landed in Montreal (from good ol' AUH) on 16th Nov.

After applying for the migration, I started searching around for jobs in Canada and the lady luck smiled upon me.

I have landed here on a work permit and the company has even sponsored my move (rellocation) from AUH (shipping of goods/air tickets / getting SIN /opening bank a/c, getting the health insurance card etc).

Had the first snowfall of the season yesterday.... it was fun.

In terms of lifestyle .. it is very different here. Stores/malls close at around 7 pm on Monday/tues/wed. Thrus/Friday they open till 9. Again on sat/sunday everything (apart from rest/bars) closes at 5 in the evening.

Cell services are very different (expensive??) than our good Etisalat ...... incoming calls can also be charged depending upon the package you choose.

Banking is also different. There we have RAK Bank offering Titanium cards for no fee and zero interest .... here any bank will charge 11 to 20 percent interest in case of late payment. Each transaction (ATM/cash withdrawal ... use of debit card) is charged.
very difficult to get a credit card without a credit history. I was lucky that my company helped me open an a/c otherwise even that may prove to be tough.

is it worth making the move .... well my wife and i will compare everyday life and keep u all posted :)

cheers.
